SALEM, Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of games at the Moyer Regional Crossover Tournament, losing to Slippery Rock and Bowie State Saturday afternoon at the Moyer Sports Complex.
The first game was 10-0 Slippery Rock while a late CU (9-7) rally fell short in a 4-1 defeat against Bowie State.
Game 1: Slippery Rock 10 – Concord 0
The starting pitchers, CU's sophomore
Reghan Hintz and Slippery Rock's Paige Gresgott, went back-and-forth early in the game before a late outburst by SRU.
Slippery Rock was able to get a run off Hintz in the second inning, but four of the first nine outs for the Melfa, Virginia native were strikeouts. Concord was able to get the tying run into scoring position the third inning after a leadoff single by senior outfielder
Morgan Gleason that was followed by a sacrifice bunt.
The Rock plated a second run in the fourth inning, and again the Mountain Lions got the leadoff batter, senior outfielder
Alina Giles, aboard in the bottom of the frame, but was unable to get her around.
The game remained 2-0 into the bottom of the sixth as senior pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the top of the sixth.
Slippery Rock scored eight runs in the seventh.
Five different Mountain Lions accounted for a hit in the game.
Hintz (2-4) struck out five over 5.1 innings in the circle. She allowed two runs on six hits.
Game 2: Bowie State 4 – Concord 1
After being shutout for six innings, Concord brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but fell just short.
BSU scored a run in the first, two in the third and another in the fifth to jump out to the 4-0 advantage.
In the seventh, senior catcher
Kayla Sholter drew a one-out walk which was followed by back-to-back singles by Gleason and freshman catcher/outfielder
Hannah Niten to load the bases. Bowie State was able to record the second out of the inning.
Down to its last out, sophomore utility
Kristy McCord came through with an RBI single, but the final out of the game was recorded on the bases on the same play.
Senior infielder
Lacie Lewis added a double in the game, her 38
th career double which moves her into seventh place all-time at CU.
Hollis (6-3) was the pitcher of record for Concord as she allowed three earned runs in four innings. She struck out three. Hintz added four strikeouts in getting six outs in relief.
The Mountain Lions are at the Botetourt Sports Complex in Troutville, Virginia to take on Seton Hill and Mansfield at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
