Concord Drops Tight Contest to Seton Hill, Defeats Mansfield

TROUTVILLE, Va. – The Concord University softball team finished up the Moyer Regional Crossover Tournament by splitting a pair of games Sunday afternoon at the Botetourt Sports Complex.

Concord lost 7-6 to Seton Hill, but bounced back with a 6-2 victory over Mansfield.

Game 1: Seton Hill 7 – Concord 6
Concord (10-8) let a late lead slip away as Seton Hill scored three times in the seventh.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first as senior pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis drove in a pair of runs on a single. SHU plated a run in the bottom of the first inning. But, junior infielder Kendall Morgan was responsible for the next two CU runs as she had an RBI triple in the second, and brought in senior catcher Kayla Sholter on a run-scoring double in the fourth.

Seton Hill was able to get within 4-3 after four innings, however, Hollis answered with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth. It was her first homer of the season.

The Griffins brought in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and tallied three runs in the seventh to sneak past the Mountain Lions.

Morgan finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBI. Hollis was 2-for-4 with a season-best four RBI.

Hollis tossed the first 3.1 innings as she struck out three and allowed three runs. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Reghan Hintz (2-5) struck out six over 3.1 innings of relief. Only one of the four runs were earned against Hintz.

Game 2: Concord 6 – Mansfield 2
CU scored five runs across its first two at-bats, and never looked back.

The first three batters reached in the bottom of the first for the Mountain Lions as Morgan scored with the bases loaded. Concord added a second run in the inning as senior infielder Lacie Lewis came in on sacrifice fly by freshman catcher/outfielder Hannah Niten.

Morgan and Lewis went back-to-back on home runs in the bottom of the second. Pinch runner and junior outfielder Savannah Brehm scored on Morgan's home run before Lewis followed her first home run of the year.

Mansfield got a pair of runs in the fourth, but Hollis struck out the potential tying run to end the rally.

Up 6-2 into the bottom of the fifth inning, Lewis led off the frame with her second homer. It was Lewis' second career multi-home run game.

Hollis (7-3) allowed one earned run over four innings on six hits and recorded three strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Reghan Hintz shut the door on any Mansfield rally as she picked up her first save of the year by notching the final nine outs. Hintz allowed two hits and struck out five.

Lewis was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs and two RBI. Morgan drove in two runs and Sholter added two hits.

Concord opens up Mountain East Conference play 12:00 p.m. Saturday at home against Charleston.
