Concord Loses to Emory & Henry, Carson-Newman

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of games on the first day of the season at the Big Region Tournament at the Ellis Softball Complex.

CU lost 15-7 to Emory & Henry before having a late rally fall short against Carson-Newman, 6-5.

Game 1: Emory & Henry 15 – Concord 7
After trailing 7-1 through 2.5 innings, Concord battled back to get within 7-6 before E&H had another offensive outburst.

The Mountain Lions got a run back in the third on an RBI single by senior outfielder Alina Giles before four runs came across in the fourth. Junior outfielder Savannah Brehm scored the first run on a flyout to right field.

Sophomore utility Blake Jamerson was responsible for the next run as she crossed on an E&H error, and Giles was in the middle of the offense once again as her run-scoring double brought in senior pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis and senior infielder Lacie Lewis.

Trailing by a run, CU watched Emory & Henry come right back with seven runs in the fifth inning.

Jamerson collected three hits while scoring all three times she was on base. Giles finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore utility Kristy McCord also notched two hits.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Reghan Hintz (0-1) gave up six earned runs in 4.1 innings while striking out five batters.

Game 2: Carson-Newman 6 – Concord 5
The Mountain Lions nearly erased a five-run deficit in their final at-bat, but came up just short in the late comeback bid.

The teams traded runs in the second and third innings with CU's run coming by way of sacrifice fly from Jamerson as she scored McCord who had led off the third with a walk.

Carson-Newman plated four runs in the fourth and added a sixth run in the bottom of the fifth to go up 6-1.

After being held to one hit through their first six at-bats, the Mountain Lions got the bats busy in the top of the seventh—all with two outs. Lewis doubled to right center field to kickstart the rally. Three consecutive singles by senior outfielder Morgan Gleason, senior catcher Kayla Sholter and McCord got the deficit to 6-3 before a two-run double from freshman outfielder Grace Dodson.

Junior infielder Kendall Morgan and Jamerson drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. However, the Eagles got the final out of the game.

Six different Mountain Lions picked up a hit in the contest. McCord was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dodson finished 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Hollis (0-1) went the distance in the circle as she allowed six runs and struck out three.

The Mountain Lions face Mars Hill and Lincoln Memorial at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at the Big Region Tournament Monday.
