JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Concord University softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Big Region Tournament at the Ellis Softball Complex.
Concord was outlasted 14-8 by Mars Hill in the first game of the day, but senior pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis delivered a complete game shutout in the second contest to lift CU to a 1-0 win over Lincoln Memorial.
Game 1: Mars Hill 14 – Concord 8
The Mountain Lions were unable to keep pace with MHU despite a six-run second inning by the Concord bats.
Mars Hill went up 2-0 in its first at-bat of the day, but Concord quickly responded in the bottom of the second.
The first four batters reach to start the inning, but an out on the bases created a bases-loaded situation for CU. A fielder's choice brought in senior catcher
Kayla Sholter before sophomore
Blake Jamerson lifted an RBI single to center field to tie the game. Junior infielder
Kendall Morgan kept the line moving with a two-run knock. On the same play, Jamerson scored to make the lead 5-2.
Senior infielder
Lacie Lewis capped the rally with her own base hit, a two-out RBI single.
The Lions tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the third, but the lead was short-lived as CU brought in a run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the inning.
Concord kept its one-run advantage until the top of the sixth when Mars Hill struck for three runs.
Lewis and senior outfielder
Morgan Gleason were both 2-for-4 in the contest. Jamerson and Morgan had two RBI each at the top of the order.
Sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Reghan Hintz struck out four over 3.1 innings in her start in the circle.
Game 2: Concord 1 – Lincoln Memorial 0 (Eight Innings)
CU needed extra innings to pick up their first win of the season as Hollis shut down the LMU offense.
After retiring eight of the first 10 batters she faced in the game, the first threat Lincoln Memorial posed against the McMinnville, Tennessee native was when the Railsplitters put the first two batters on base to start the fifth. However, a fielder's choice, a caught stealing at third and a flyout ended the potential rally.
No LMU batter got past first base in the sixth and seventh innings, and Hollis sat down the side in order in the eighth, setting the stage for Concord to break through offensively in the bottom of the inning.
A leadoff walk to Gleason was followed by a walk to Hollis two batters later with one out. The next batter, sophomore utility
Kristy McCord, put a ball in play to left field that was mishandled allowing Gleason to score.
Freshman catcher/infielder
Hannah Niten has CU's only hit in the contest, a second-inning single.
In her complete-game shutout, Hollis (1-1) threw 109 pitches as she scattered four hits and one walk. She struck out two batters.
Concord is slated to host Belmont Abbey 1:00 p.m. Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader.
