OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball team travels to the Mountain East Conference's first place team Glenville State in high-stakes regular season finale Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Waco Center.
LAST TIME OUT
After losing two straight games, the Mountain Lions bounced back in dominant fashion, defeating West Virginia State to the tune of a 95-61 home win. The first quarter remained close with CU holding a 19-17 lead entering the second. Concord's defense completely stonewalled the Yellow Jackets in the second quarter, holding them to just eight points. Senior forward
Abbie Smith scored nine of CU's 19 in the quarter to push Concord's lead to 13 at the break. The second half saw Concord just put away West Virginia State with an offensive explosion. Five scorers finished in double figures, with Smith leading the way with 22 points. Behind her was fellow senior,
Kennedy Scales who netted 19. Senior forward
Olivia Ziolkowski and sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs each had 15 points. Junior guard
Alexis Frazee added in 11 points off the bench.
FAREWELL, CARTER CENTER
The last game inside the Carter Center for the season proved fruitful for the Mountain Lion seniors. Starting with senior guard
Jewell Dixon. Dixon drilled the only shot she attempted, a three-pointer that extended Concord's lead in the fourth quarter. Next up for the seniors is Scales. The Salem, Virginia native had a brilliant game, scoring 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She also tied a career high by nailing three shots from beyond the arc. Last but certainly not least is Smith. The Little Hocking, Ohio native capped off her career in front of Mountain Lion fans with a 22-point, 11-rebound gem. Smith went 6-of-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line. On the defensive end, she rejected a pair of shots. For both Scales and Smith, this was their 35th home win as they finish their home careers with a 35-18 record.
BRING THE INTENSITY
Concord made life incredibly tough for West Virginia State, holding them to just 61 points. The Yellow Jackets shot just 33.8 percent from the field and 30.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Mountain Lions forced 13 turnovers and many of them were caused by Concord applying pressure on every pass and ball screen. Defensively, Smith and Ziolkowski each blocked two shots. They both rank in the top five amon the MEC's best shot blockers, with Ziolkowski averaging 1.4 a game and Smith 1.3. To showcase the importance of CU's defense, every single one of the Mountain Lions 18 wins has come when they allow under 80 points. Concord also holds an undefeated 12-0 record when they hold opponents to under 70 points.
ENJOY THE SHOW
On the other side of the ball, everything was clicking for Concord as they snapped the two-game losing streak. The Mountain Lions scored a season-high 95 points, most since they scored 99 against Glenville State in the regular season finale last season. Concord also dished out a season-high 25 assists, which means CU assisted on 25 of its 35 made field goals. The 25 assists are the most since Concord had 25 in a win over Alderson Broaddus on January 28, 2023. As a unit, CU shot 59.3 percent from the field and went 10-of-21 from three-point range. Concord scored a whopping 57 points in the second half, the only time they have scored at least 50 in a half this season. The last time that happened was when they went for 57 in the 99-75 win versus Glenville State last season.sus Glenville State last season.
MARQUEE MATCHUP
The last game of the regular season for Concord is a blockbuster as the Mountain Lions travel to Glenville State with massive seeding implications on the line. Glenville State has locked up the first seed in the MEC Tournament. With a win, Concord will move up to the third seed. There is a slight chance for second place, but that would require West Virginia Wesleyan to lose to last-place Davis & Elkins. If the Mountain Lions lose and Charleston wins, Concord will hold the fourth seed. If both Concord and Charleston loses, CU will take the third seed.
HUNGRY FOR REVENGE
Concord's last meeting with Glenville State saw a furious Concord comeback fall just short with GSU winning 91-86 in Athens. This was just one of two conference losses inside the Carter Center for CU. Scales poured in a career-high 22 points against the Pioneers, while Stubbs just missed out on a triple-double going for 15 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds. Concord will have its hands full as the first-place Pioneers have lost just one game at home all season, a three-point defeat against Wheeling. Concord has defeated every Mountain East Conference opponent this season, except for Glenville State.
