Concord Closes Home Season with 95-61 Win Over West Virginia State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team scored a season-high 95 points as the Mountain Lions ran away from West Virginia State to win 95-61 Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference game at the Carter Center.

CU (18-9, 13-6 MEC) shot 59.3 percent from the field, netted 10 three-pointers on 47.6 percent shooting and added 46 points in the paint. Defensively, the Mountain Lions limited West Virginia State (12-14, 8-11 MEC) to 33.8 percent from the floor.

The Yellow Jackets hung around in the opening quarter, but it was Concord that took a 19-17 lead to the second as senior forward Abbie Smith scored the final points of the quarter.

The Mountain Lions outscored West Virginia State 11-2 over the first five minutes of the second period as a fast break layup by sophomore guard Kenyah Stubbs capped the run at the 4:48 mark. WVSU got the lead back to nine points less than a minute later, however, CU finished the first half by scoring eight of the final 12 points to take a 38-25 edge into halftime.

Concord's first 20-point lead came at the 4:23 mark of the third quarter after freshman guard Cadence Blackburn scored off a transition bucket to take the advantage to 55-34.

After three quarters, the Mountain Lions led 68-45.

The lead ballooned to a game-high 35 points, 90-55, after one of the 10 triples for Concord—a three-point make by senior guard Jewell Dixon with 2:43 remaining. Freshman guard Sadie Robinson was good on a three-pointer in the final 1:10 of the game for the final margin.

CU's 59.3 percent shooting was a season-best and the 95 points were the most scored by the Maroon and Gray since February 2024 at West Liberty.

Wednesday night marked the fourth time this season that Concord has made at least 10 three-pointers in a game.

In her final home game, Smith finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, her 11th 20-10 game of the season. Also playing in her final game inside the Carter Center, senior forward Kennedy Scales went for 19 points, including three three-pointers.

Stubbs and senior forward Olivia Ziolkowski both tallied 15 points. Stubbs tied her career high with nine assists. Ziolkowski finished 7-for-10 from the field.

Junior guard Alexis Frazee matched Scales with three triples as part of her 11 points in 26 minutes off the bench.

Concord had its first 25-assist game since January 2023 against Alderson-Broaddus. Along with Stubbs' nine assists, junior guard Kily Smich handed out five assists and did not commit a turnover.

The Mountain Lions wrap up the regular season at Glenville State 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
