WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team dropped a 109-82 decision to nationally-ranked, number six West Liberty Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at the ASRC.
WLU (23-3, 18-1 MEC) ran out to a 19-6 lead through the first five-plus minutes of the game, and Concord (13-13, 9-9 MEC) still trailed by double digits, 37-21, at the nine-minute mark of the first half before mounting a charge.
CU ran off an 11-1 spurt to get within 38-32 at the 6:27 mark of the first half. Sophomore guard
Brendan Hoffman started the run with an old-school, three-point play before a layup from junior forward
Eldon Terry got the Mountain Lions within two possessions less than three minutes later.
The Maroon and Gray surge continued as they pulled within 40-36 of West Liberty after a bucket from sophomore guard
Josiah Rickards with 4:06 remaining in the opening half.
However, CU was held to five points over the remainder of the half and trailed 56-41 at halftime.
In the second half, the Mountain Lions could only get as close as 13 points.
Junior forward
Boubacar Djigo netted his team-best seventh 20-point game of the season with 22 points on 11-for-14 shooting. He just missed his 17
th double-double as he grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Fellow junior forward
Anfernee Hanna threw in 17 points as he went 8-for-9 at the foul line.
Hoffman tossed in 16 points off the bench while freshman guard
Micah Young tallied 13 points in a reserve role.
Concord outrebounded the Hilltoppers 36-31 in the contest.
Offensively, CU shot 56.6 percent in the first half, but was held to 35.9 percent after halftime. For the game, the Mountain Lions shot 44.9 percent
CU wraps up the home portion of its schedule against West Virginia State 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
