ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team was outpaced by Wheeling, 84-71, in a Mountain East Conference game inside the Carter Center Wednesday night.
Concord (17-8, 12-5 MEC) controlled the first 12 minutes of the game, but was unable to slow down the Wheeling (14-11, 9-8 MEC) offense in the middle quarters.
CU shot out to a 13-5 lead at the 6:32 mark after senior guard
Kennedy Scales connected on a three-pointer. The Mountain Lions maintained the lead throughout the opening 10 minutes and worked the advantage back to six points after sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs nailed her own three-pointer with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter.
However, the Cardinals scored six of the final eight points to trim the Concord lead to 24-22 at the end of the first period.
A left-wing three-pointer by senior forward
Abbie Smith at the 8:25 mark of the second pushed CU's lead back to four points, 29-25. But, it was Wheeling that seized control as the Cardinals went on 13-2 run to lead 38-31. The Mountain Lions closed to within five points, but Wheeling led 45-37 at halftime.
CU got as close as six points in the third quarter as Wheeling opened up a 63-49 lead after 30 minutes.
The Mountain Lions was unable to get the deficit under 10 points for the remainder of the game.
Smith finished with 18 points as she battled foul trouble throughout, playing only 25 minutes. She finished 8-for-12 from the floor. Fellow senior forward
Olivia Ziolkowski tossed in 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Stubbs netted 15 points and handed out a team-best five assists. Scales rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points.
Concord shot 50 percent (29-for-58) from the floor, but could not hold down Wheeling as the Cardinals shot 59.3 percent. The Mountain Lions held a 31-24 rebounding advantage.
CU travels to West Liberty 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
