ATHENS, W.Va. – Sophomore pitcher
Kaden Varela-Payne of the Concord University baseball team has been selected as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Week, the organization has released.
In his second start of the season, Varela-Payne tossed seven strong innings as he limited Ferrum to one run on three hits while striking out eight batters Sunday afternoon. The Raleigh, North Carolina native recorded at least one strikeout in his first six innings of work as seven of his punchouts came in the first five innings.
Varela-Payne faced just one over the minimum through five innings, and did not walk a batter. He limited Ferrum to an average .136 while on the mound.
Wheeling's Edward Mateo made it a Mountain East Conference sweep as he was voted as the NCBWA Atlantic Region Hitter of the Week.
