OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball team wraps up its three-game homestand with a crucial Mountain East Conference matchup against West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. inside the Carter Center.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mountain Lions secured their third straight victory with an 89-58 victory over Fairmont State Monday night. Concord took an 11-9 lead with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter and didn't look back, growing the lead to as high as 38 points in the fourth uarter. While it was a very balanced approach on offense, it was the freshman guard
Cadence Blackburn exploding for a career-high 24 points to lead Concord. She was joined in double figures by three other Mountain Lions. Sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs finished with 16 points and a career high 12 rebounds in the contest, her second career double-double. Junior guard
Alexis Frazee had 14 points and senior forward
Abbie Smith tallied 13 points. Concord's defense continued its great form, holding opponents to under 60 points for the third straight game.
BOOST OFF THE BENCH
Concord's bench posted 41 combined points, setting a new season high in the 31-point victory over the Fighting Falcons. Blackburn topped the charts with 24 points, going 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. She added on three rebounds, two steals and an assist to cap off her career night. The Kopperston, West Virginia native scored 10 of Concord's 21 in the second quarter to push CU's lead to double-digits. Frazee also gave Concord a huge lift with 14 points, five rebounds, and a career-high eight assists. Frazee went 6-of-6 in the contest, including two triples coming in the fourth quarter. Her ability to pick out cutting Mountain Lions was on full display, including four assists to former high school teammate Smith.
DANGER ZONE
CU stymied the Fighting Falcons with its zone defense as Concord held Fairmont to just 27.3 percent from the field, which is the lowest field goal percentage allowed by Concord this season. They held Fairmont to  4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from three-point range. Smith was at the heart of Concord's zone, serving as its anchor. The Little Hocking, Ohio native came away with four blocks in the game. That's the second straight game she has rejected four shots in. Against Point Park on Saturday, Smith went over 100 career blocks. Both Smith (1.3 blocks per game) and frontcourt partner
Olivia Ziolkowski (1.3) are top five in the MEC in blocks per game.
OFFENSIVE MASTERCLASS
It was a team effort in Concord's most recent outing against Fairmont State. The Mountain Lions ran their offense to perfection, tallying 23 assists which tied their season high. Frazee finished with eight to lead the team, Stubbs was behind her with four assists, and five different Mountain Lions ended with two assists. Concord shot a blistering 57.6 percent from the field which was also a season-best. Going 73.3 percent on three-point attempts was also a season-best for Concord as the offense was on fire from start to finish. The Maroon and Gray shot at least 50 percent in all four quarters against Fairmont State.
START FAST
One of the keys to victory for Concord has been getting off to good starts. Over the three-game winning streak, Concord has been ahead after the first 20 minutes in each of the three. On the season, they are 12-1 when they enter the locker room with the lead. In the first matchup with West Virginia Wesleyan, Concord trailed by 10 at halftime and by 13 entering the fourth quarter. Despite a furious comeback attempt in the fourth, the deficit was too much to overcome. A lot of that had to do with limiting West Virginia Wesleyan's offense as they shot 18-32 (56.2 percent) in the first half to jump ahead of Concord.
PLAY IN THE PAINT
Concord has its hands full with the Bobcats and will look to make life more difficult for WVWC on the offensive end. The Bobcats have two of the best scorers in the conference in senior forward Emma Witt and freshman guard Kilah Dandridge. Witt leads the MEC, averaging 19.4 points per game, while Dandridge is posting 16.1 points a night. In the first matchup, Witt finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Dandridge also tacked on 20. Concord got its offense going as Smith, Stubbs, and Ziolkowski all had 20 or more points. Witt and Smith are the top two scorers in the MEC as Smith scores 17.9 points per game. The two leaders are also top two in the MEC in field-goal percentage as Witt shoots 55.7 percent and Smith is hitting on 55.3 percent of her shots. Smith has an edge in rebounding as she leads the conference at 10.4 rebounds per game. Witt grabs 7.4 boards per game.
