TOURNAMENT TIME!
It's that time of year once more, Concord ia back in the MEC Tournament. With the conference moving to a division setup this season, the Mountain Lions will have to play in the MEC Quarterfinal round for the first time since 2023 which featured a 3-2 extra time victory over West Virginia Wesleyan. The winner will advance to play the top seed in the North Division, the Davis & Elkins Senators. Concord is still in good standings in the NCAA rankings, despite the heartbreaking loss to Charleston. The Mountain Lions still sit in fourth place in Super Region 1 with a 57.184 rating.
AWARDS SEASON
Another successful season for Concord has brought for individual silverware to Athens. Senior defender Zakari Messam was tabbed as the MEC Defensive Player of the Year, the first defensive player of the year in Concord history. Freshman midfielder Josiah Ochoa brought home MEC Freshman of the Year, another award that Concord had previously never secured. They were both named to the All-MEC First Team alongside junior goalkeeper Iori Tanaka. All-MEC Second Team selections include junior defenders Ben Musengo and Neko Worthy. Rounding out the list are All-MEC Honorable Mention selections for junior forward Lucas Costa and senior forward Dominique Malhomme.
KEEP THE STREAK ALIVE
Concord have had Point Park's number in the short history the two teams have with the Mountain Lions taking all five matchups. They've met once this season, a 2-0 win for Concord that featured a penalty kick goal from Costa and a goal from senior midfielder Keeyan Thomas. Another streak CU is trying to continue is making the MEC Semifinal round. The Mountain Lions have made the semis in three straight seasons, advancing to the MEC Championship game in 2024 and 2025. Concord have also found wins in three straight opening rounds, whether that was the quarterfinals or semifinals. A season ago, it was a 3-2 victory over West Liberty that saw CU extend its opening round success.
JIMMYS AND JOES
We've set the stage but let's meet some players to keep your eye on in the match. For Concord, Ochoa has pulled a lot of strings in the midfield. He's scored five goals and dished out four assists on the season. Costa and Malhomme will also be major players with four goals a piece and the ability to create their own shot. Concord's defense, spearheaded by Messam and Tanaka, will also play a massive factor. The group has only conceded 10 goals and led Concord to a program-high 10 shutouts.
For Point Park, All-MEC First Team selection Hector Moreno is out for a yellow card suspension. This has huge implications as Moreno leads PPU with six goals and missed the previous matchup with Concord. A lot of weight will be on the shoulders Joel Gomez, Point Park's second leading scorer.
SCOUTING THE POINT PARK PIONEERS
Point Park has had a good season at 6-8-3, but have been scuffling as of late. The Pioneers have a 1-4 record over their last five matches but look to bounce back against a Concord team that have had their number throughout history. PPU have mustered just two goals against Concord in five total games and have given up 12. This season, the Pioneers have also struggled away from home this year with just a 1-6 record on the road.
