LOCK 'EM DOWN
The Mountain Lions won their fourth straight game in a defensive grinder at West Virginia Wesleyan, 17-9, Saturday. The nine points allowed by Concord were the fewest by a Maroon and Gray defensive unit since the 2023 season when it also held Wesleyan to nine points in a 38-9 home win. Saturday marked the third time this fall that CU has limited a team to less than 350 yards, but the first time since the first two games of the season, as the Bobcats only gained 344 yards on the day. Additionally, Concord had to guard against a Wesleyan offense for more than 33 minutes which was the third-highest opponent time of possession this season. In winning their fourth straight game, the Mountain Lions now have their longest winning streak since the beginning of the 2022 season when they started 4-0. Additionally, Saturday was CU's 450
th program win.
TAKE IT AWAY
Not only did the Concord defense stone wall the West Virginia Wesleyan offense, the Maroon and Gray also had two takeaways on the day. Redshirt freshman defensive back
Elijah Owens came up with his second interception of the season with a first-quarter pick. Senior defensive lineman
Michelot Sine jumped on a fumble in the second half. Both takeaways came in the defensive red zone. CU is third in the conference in takeaways (15) and improved its season turnover margin to +7 as it did not turn the ball over on offense against a Bobcats' defense that entered Saturday leading the MEC with 18 takeaways. Concord ranks in a tie for 17
th in Division II in turnover margin this season. The last time the Mountain Lions finished the year with a turnover margin of +5 or better was in 2014.
1K COLLINS
On Saturday afternoon, sophomore wide receiver
Dom Collins went over 1,000 receiving yards as he tied his career high with nine receptions for a season-best 166 yards and two scores versus the Bobcats. Collins became the eighth wide receiver in program history to amass 1,000 yards in a season as he now sits at 1,016 yards, fourth in Division II. The Princeton, West Virginia native is second in Division II in touchdowns (12) after recording his fourth multi-touchdown game of the season, also the seventh such game of his career. Entering the Wheeling matchup, Collins has a streak of six straight games with 100 or more yards receiving. During the streak, Collins has three games of 150 or more receiving yards. Over the past six seasons, CU has had three 1,000-yard receivers: Tywan Pearce (1,090) in 2021 and Jarod Bowie (1,773) in 2022 as the single-season program record.
SCORING ZONE
The number one red zone offense in the MEC continued its production Saturday afternoon. Even though the Mountain Lions only scored two touchdowns, one came inside the 20, a 19-yard strike from graduate quarterback
Devin Kargman to Collins. CU extended its streak to 26 straight trips into the red zone with points on the board—the third-longest active streak in Division. Harding has scored on 33 straight trips and Quincy has recorded points on 28 consecutive red zone attempts. Concord is fifth in Division II in red zone percentage (96.7 percent/29-for-30). The lone time this season that Concord did not come away with points inside the 20-yard line was on an illegal touching penalty against Bluefield State on fourth-and-goal as the penalty carried a loss of down. The last time CU had 30 or more red zone scores was in 2022, going 37-for-49 (75.5 percent).
SENIOR SIGNAL CALLERS
Saturday's contest features the top two passing quarterbacks in the MEC in Kargman and Wheeling's Landon Lutz. Kargman enters Saturday ninth in Division II in passing yards (2,277) as he thrown for 250 or more yards in all but one game this season, 225 yards at Davidson. Kargman's 20 touchdowns are tied for 10
th in Division II as he has at least one touchdown toss in all eight games in 2026. Where Kargman has really excelled is taking care of the ball, the Camden, New Jersey native has only thrown four interceptions for the season, and just one in his last 98 pass attempts. For Lutz, he needs 176 yards to surpass 2,000 yards for the first time in his career. Lutz is scheduled to make his 36
th appearance in a Wheeling uniform Saturday. Like Kargman, Lutz has at least one touchdown in all eight games this year, and after throwing a pick in five straight games has not thrown an interception in more than 100 attempts.
CLASH OF STYLES
Concord and Wheeling have achieved success this year in different ways. CU leads the MEC in scoring and is top 15 nationally at 39.0 points per game. The Mountain Lions are also top 15 nationally gaining more than 463 yards per game. On the flip side, the Cardinals are second in the MEC in both scoring defense (23.8) and yards allowed per game (365.8). Wheeling also use a methodical approach on offense as the Cardinals are holding the ball for nearly 32 minutes (31:49) per game which ranks top 30 in Division II. Concord has only won the time of possession twice this season and averages just over 26 minutes per game with the offense on the field. However, the Mountain Lions have hit 74 explosive plays (runs of 10 or more yards and passes of 20 or more yards), 40 runs and 34 passes this fall.
TRICK OR TREAT
Saturday will be CU's first game on Halloween since the 2015 season—the 2020 season was postponed to the spring of 2021. The Maroon and Gray has not had great success on Halloween. Dating back to the 1993 season, Concord is only 1-4 on Halloween with the lone win coming in 2009 at Fairmont State, 15-9. The Mountain Lions are also trying to buck a trend against Wheeling as they enter 1-5 all-time versus the Cardinals, the lone win coming in 2022 at Callaghan Stadium. CU had a 14-13 lead at Wheeling late in the third quarter last year, but could not hang on, falling 26-21. Concord's defense limited Lutz to 18-for-42 passing and an interception. Two years ago in Athens, the game featured 80 points and nearly 900 yards of offense as Wheeling got out with a 50-30 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
4- Penalties committed by Concord at WVWC, the fewest since the 2024 season at West Virginia State.
5- CU is seeking its fifth straight win which would be the longest win streak since the end of the 2014 season.
51- Yards in distance of freshman
Christian Torres' field goal at West Virginia Wesleyan which was the second-longest kick in program history.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Wheeling bounced back from consecutive one-possession losses with perhaps its most impressive win of the season, a 27-24 road victory at Frostburg State. Lutz's top target in the passing game is Solo Love who has 592 yards and three touchdowns. Dawuan Green is third in the MEC in rushing with 603 yards, but has only found the end zone three times. Wheeling's defense is third in the MEC in interceptions (seven). Individually, Jalen Higginbotham is second in the conference in tackles with 68 as 7.5 have gone for loss.
