Concord Comes From Behind to Defeat West Virginia Wesleyan in Five Sets

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team stormed back from a 2-1 deficit to beat West Virginia Wesleyan in five sets Monday night in a Mountain East Conference contest inside the Carter Center.

The set scores were 26-24, 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 17-15.

In an entertaining match, the decisive fifth set proved to be the game where neither team could establish a lead with 13 ties and five lead changes. With West Virginia Wesleyan (10-16, 5-8 MEC) just two points away from winning at 13-12, the Mountain Lions (18-9, 10-3 MEC) charged back with a kill from sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins and a service ace from senior setter Savannah Davila.

Another Adkins kill gave CU a second match, 15-14, but it wasn't until a kill from senior outside hitter Meg Williams and a service ace from junior defensive specialist Gretchen Davila secured a second straight five-set victory.

Out of the gate, Concord fell behind 8-3 to start the match, but stormed back to go up 15-14 after back-to-back Bobcat attack error. Now up 24-20, the Mountain Lions watched WVWC rattle off four straight points to tie the first set at 24-24. A dump shot kill from senior setter Paige Richmond and a solo block by freshman middle hitter Mariah Moss gave CU the first set.

The Mountain Lions chased the second and third set, but were not as fortunate to come up on the winning end as they fell behind 2-1.

Up against the deficit, the fourth set was Concord's best of the night as it never trailed and only faced two ties, 2-2 and 6-6, while hitting .345. Tied at 6-6, CU ran off six straight points with Adkins and freshman middle hitter Alivia Stover combining on two blocks and Williams throwing in one of her 21 kills. Concord was never threatened in the remainder of the fourth set to push the match to a fifth game.

Williams notched her eighth double-double of the season as she matched her season high in kills (21) to go with 10 digs.
Adkins was on both ends of the production as she rolled up 11 kills to go with a match-high seven blocks. Junior right side Maddie Stull tallied 11 kills while senior outside hitter Chloe Thompson (10 kills) rounded out the players with double-figure kills.

Richmond recorded 28 assists while senior setter Haley Sweeney contributed 15 assists in three sets.

Senior libero Allie Davis had 20 digs.

The Mountain Lions travel to Charleston 7:00 p.m. Friday in a matchup of the top two teams in the MEC South.
