BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University football team pushed its winning streak to four games as it held down West Virginia Wesleyan in a 17-9 win Saturday afternoon at Cebe Ross Field in a Mountain East Conference game.
Despite giving up more than 200 yards of offense to West Virginia Wesleyan (3-6, 2-4 MEC) in the first half, the Mountain Lions (6-2, 4-2 MEC) came up with two takeaways as redshirt freshman defensive back
Elijah Owens intercepted a pass inside the Concord 15-yard line in the first quarter. Later in the second quarter, senior defensive lineman
Michelot Sine jumped on a loose ball to stall a Bobcats' drive at the CU nine-yard line.
Concord's offense finally got on the board on its fourth drive of the game as sophomore wide receiver
Dom Collins snagged a 19-yard touchdown from graduate quarterback
Devin Kargman with three minutes left in the first half.
Into the third quarter, CU opened the second half with a score as freshman kicker
Christian Torres booted through a career-long 51-yard field goal field at the 12:24 mark of the third—it was his second field goal of at least 50 yards this season.
The biggest momentum shift of the game came at the end of the third quarter and early in the fourth. With the ball at the one-yard line on first-and-goal and the Maroon and Gray clinging to a 10-6 edge, Concord's defense stopped the Bobcats on four straight running plays. Sophomore defensive lineman
Jacorey Jackson made the final stop on fourth-and-goal on the first play of the fourth quarter.
The Mountain Lions offense turned the defensive stop into points almost instantly.
After two runs to get some breathing rooms, Collins caught a comeback route from Kargman, broke a tackle and raced down the sideline for a 73-yard score to push the lead to 17-6.
West Virginia Wesleyan marched right down the field, but settled for a field goal with 9:15 remaining, keeping Concord ahead by eight points, 17-9. Â
CU was unable to put the game away on its ensuing drive, but the Concord defense rose to the occasion again on the next Wesleyan drive as Jackson's sack on third down forced a punt from Bobcats' one-yard line.
The Mountain Lions were able to run the final 1:57 off the clock and secure their fourth straight win.
Jackson led the Concord defense with a career-high nine tackles to go with his first career two-sack game. Sophomore defensive back
Berlin Campfort matched Jackson's tackle total. Sophomore linebacker
Caleb Asobo had CU's third sack of the day.
Concord held WVWC to 137 yards in the second half.
Collins tied his career high with nine receptions for a season-high 166 yards receiving to go with a pair of scores. Kargman finished with 254 yards and the two touchdowns to Collins.
Sophomore running back
Jayden Williams finished with 89 yards on the ground as Concord leading rusher. Â
