ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team picked up its second straight sweep as it cruised past Glenville State Friday night in a Mountain East Conference match at the Carter Center.
The set scores were 25-21, 25-3, 25-19.
The Mountain Lions (12-7, 4-1 MEC) came out swinging as they immediately went up 5-1, but then needed a late surge in the closing stages of the set to go up 1-0 in the match. Tied at 17-17, CU used a kill from senior outside hitter
Chloe Thompson and an assisted block from sophomore middle hitter
Addie Adkins and freshman middle hitter
Mariah Moss to kickstart a 6-1 run that included two more blocks from Adkins and Moss.
The momentum carried over to the second set as Concord had its most lopsided set win since a pair of 25-3 score lines in a sweep of Bluefield State in 2018. The Mountain Lions forced 17 Glenville State (9-8, 2-3 MEC) errors in the second set that included seven blocks. Ultimately, the -.417 hitting percentage led to CU holding the Pioneers to -.059 for the match. Senior middle hitter
Jasmine Anderson had three of her five blocks for the match in the second game while Moss ended the set with a solo block.
Even with the dominate second set, the Mountain Lions still needed to finish the job in the third game. Concord stormed out to a 6-1 advantage. But, Glenville State came back to take a 14-13 edge. However, a 9-2 run by the Maroon and Gray put the game and the match out of reach. Two of the three final points came on kills by junior right side
Maddie Stull to cap the spurt.
After a season-high 15 blocks at West Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday night, Concord collected 11 blocks. Adkins matched Anderson's block total. Stull threw in four blocks. Thompson and senior outside hitter
Meg Williams each had six kills. Senior setter
Paige Richmond notched 11 assists.
Senior libero
Allie Davis tallied 12 digs, and in the second set she became CU's all-time career leader in digs, now with 1,955 for her career.
The Mountain Lions travel to Shawnee State 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
