Concord Edged in Five Sets at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost a five-set match to West Liberty Saturday afternoon at the ASRC in Mountain East Conference action.

Concord (15-9, 7-3 MEC) won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-15, but was unable to win a third set as WLU (8-16, 7-3 MEC) won 25-19, 25-23 and 15-9.

CU hit .279 in the loss, including .450 in the first two sets. The Mountain Lions controlled the match at the start as they finished the first set on an 8-2 run. The final three points came on kills from senior outside hitter Meg Williams who had a team-best 18 kills in the match.

Early in the second game, Concord turned a 9-8 edge into a commanding 15-8 lead with six straight points. Five of the six points came on West Liberty errors. For the remainder of the set, the lead held at, at least four points with sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins closing out a 2-0 lead with back-to-back kills.

After the Hilltoppers won the third set by six points, the Mountain Lions looked to close it out in four set, but came up just short. Concord trailed 21-18 late in the set, however, CU came up with four of the next five points to tie the game at 22-22. West Liberty, though, was able to force a decisive fifth set.

A 5-0 run by West Liberty in the early going of the fifth set was too much for the Mountain Lions to overcome as WLU lead 9-4. CU got within three points, 11-8, after a Williams' kill, but could not get any closer.

The only other player with double-digit kills in the match was senior outside hitter Chloe Thompson who registered 10 kills. Senior setter Paige Richmond collected 21 assists. Senior setter Savannah Davila notched her first career double-double with 12 assists and 13 digs.

Senior libero Allie Davis had a team-best 15 digs.

Concord opens up a three-match homestand 7:00 p.m. Tuesday against West Virginia State.
