OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball comes home to face Davis & Elkins in another conference game this Saturday at 2:00 p.m at the Carter Center.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mountain Lions saw their comeback fall just short in a 79-81 defeat in Buckhannon against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats. Concord trailed by 13 entering the fourth quarter, before exploding for 34 points in the final period—the 34 points was the highest scoring quarter of the season. They got the lead all the way down to just two points, but were unable to retake the lead. CU had three scorers with 20 or more points and another in double figures. Senior forward
Abbie Smith finished with 24 points, her most in Mountain East Conference play this season. Sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs put up 22 points, five assists, and a pair of steals in the narrow defeat. Senior forward
Olivia Ziolkowski stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, four assists, two blocks, a rebound, and an assist. Junior guard
Alexis Frazee added 11 off the bench. As a unit, Concord shot an even 50 percent (29-of-58) from the field, 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from beyond the arc, and 72 percent (18-of-25) from the charity stripe.
FORMIDABLE FRONTCOURT
Smith and Ziolkowski have been instrumental in Concord's success this season. The pair of senior forwards are coming off of some of their best work in the narrow defeat to West Virginia Wesleyan. This marked just the second time that they have both scored 20 or more points in a game, the first coming against UVa.-Wise back on November 22. Against the Bobcats, they were extremely efficient, shooting a combined 19-30 which is good for 63.3 percent. Smith and Ziolkowski didn't just do it with scoring as they combined for 10 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. Smith has been an offensive powerhouse this season, averaging 18.4 points per game (first in the MEC), shooting at a 55.4 clip from the field (first), and knocking down 85.1 percent of her free throws (fifth). Ziolkowski has sent back 1.3 blocks per game (fourth in the conference) and rejected a total of 17 shots (second) on the defensive end to form one of the most dominant frontcourts in the conference.
LEVELING UP
Even in a loss, Concord's offense seems to be getting better and better. The Mountain Lions made 29 field goals which is tied for their third most this season. Concord's scoring offense now ranks fourth in the MEC, averaging 74.9 points per game. They've scored at least 70 points in four straight games. Where the Mountain Lions really shine is in their efficiency. CU is shooting 42.8 percent as a team, which is good for third place in the conference. They also sit in third in efficiency from beyond the arc, making 32.6 percent of their three-point looks. Concord has shot better than their season average from the field in three straight contests and will look to do that over four straight games for the first time this season against Davis & Elkins.
SCRUM FOR THE TOP
Six games into conference play, the Mountain East appears to be completely up for grabs this year. Concord is currently tied for fourth place in the standings but are just one game back from the top of the MEC. That top spot is shared with Glenville State and West Virginia Wesleyan who both hold 5-1 conference records. Charleston is just a smidge behind the top teams with a 5-2 record, and Fairmont State is tied with Concord for fourth place. Every team in the conference has dropped at least one game in MEC play, showcasing just how close the conference is.
IN THE PAINT
Concord is coming off of one of their best shooting performances against West Virginia Wesleyan, but they were really excellent on the interior. The Mountain Lions scored 44 points in the paint in the game, which is tied for their third most this season. The top spot for CU is still reserved by the 56 points in the paint they scored in the season opener versus Seton Hill. The paint has been a really reliable place for the Mountain Lions this season where they average 34.5 points in the paint per game. Concord not only does a good job of establishing their bigs down low, but getting their guards downhill. Stubbs is really excellent at getting to the rack and either scoring or going to the free-throw line. Stubbs netted 17 of her 22 points against the Bobcats either came from the inside the paint or made free throws.
DOMINANCE
Concord has had D&E's number in history, leading the series history 26-9. CU is enjoying a solid streak against the Senators, winning nine straight games against them. The Mountain Lions are a perfect 6-0 under head coach
Tesla Southcott against Davis & Elkins. Looking back at last year's matchups, Concord scored a 65-57 win in Athens behind Smith's 18 points and nine rebounds. The other matchup in 2024-25 saw CU squeak out a 73-69 win in Elkins. Smith was masterful in this one, posting 19 points and 19 rebounds to steer Concord to victory. Frazee also had 11 points on 3-for-6 from the field to assist in bringing home the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
14Â -
Kenyah Stubbs attempted 14 free throws against West Virginia Wesleyan. This is tied for the second most attempts by an individual in the MEC this season.
50Â - The Mountain Lions shot exactly 50 percent from the field against West Virginia Wesleyan. This is their third highest percentage of the season.
1,819Â - It's been 1,819 days since Concord last fell to Davis & Elkins (January 16, 2021).
SCOUTING THE SENATORS
It's been a tough year for the Senators to thus far, sitting at a 1-11 overall record without a win in conference play yet. Sophomore guard Jahniya Marion has been a bright spot for this squad leading the team in points per game (14.3), assists per game (2.2), and steals per game (1.8). Davis & Elkins nearly picked off West Liberty at home last weekend as 51 points in the second half wasn't enough in an 84-80 loss.
