OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball returns to conference play with a road game against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mountain Lions bounced back with a big win over non-conference opponent Salem 81-59. The 22-point victory was Concord's highest margin of victory this season. Senior forward
Abbie Smith finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, marking her seventh performance this season with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. It was her eighth double-double overall this winter. Senior forward
Olivia Ziolkowski posted 15 points to go with four rebounds and a career-high four steals. Sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs was the third and final Mountain Lion in double figures with 11 points.
MAKING THEM COUNT
Concord has been stellar from the free throw over the last two games, shooting above 80 percent from the charity stripe. Against Fairmont State, the Mountain Lions went 16-of-20 from the free-throw line and against Salem, they made 23-of-27 attempts for a season's best 85.2 percent. CU has shot at least 70 percent in all but two games this season, for an average of 74.5 percent on the year which ranks fourth best in the Mountain East Conference.
Abbie Smith leads Concord from the line, making 57 of her 66 attempts this season. That's good for an impressive 86.4 percent that ranks second in the MEC. When they shoot at least 25 free throws, Concord is a perfect 3-0.
BENCH POWER
Concord's bench continues to deliver this season, putting up 25 points in the victory over Salem. Freshman forward
Nasiya Smith led the way with seven points and guards
Alexis Frazee and
Lacee Smith each dropped in six of their own. In 12 games this season, Concord has gotten at least 10 points from the bench unit in 10 games. The Mountain Lion bench has outscored opposing bench units in five of 12 games. CU is 4-1 when its bench outscores the opposition. Frazee is the team's leading scorer off the bench, averaging 8.4 points per game on the season and doing it on 59.1 percent from the field and 61.3 percent from beyond the arc. Frazee is tied for third in the MEC in three-pointers made (19) and is 13 for her last 17 from three-point distance.
IN THE PASSING LANES
The Mountain Lion defense is coming off one of their best performances of the year. Not only did they hold Salem to just 59 points, the second lowest point total allowed this season, but they came away with 14 steals which ties a season high. Ziolkowski led the way with four steals. Frazee had three steals off the bench and both Stubbs and junior guard Kiley Smich had a pair themselves. These 14 steals were apart of 22 Salem turnovers that led to 23 points for CU. Concord is 6-0 when they commit fewer than 15 turnovers and finish with fewer turnovers than their opponents.
COOL 'EM DOWN
Concord will have their hands full with a very efficient offense that West Virginia Wesleyan runs. The Bobcats average 77.4 points per game (second in the MEC), a whopping 52.4 field goal percentage (first), a 35.1 three-point percentage (first), and a 76.3 free-throw percentage (third). The Mountain Lions will have senior forward Emma Witt and freshman guard Kilah Dandridge circled as major focal points. They both average at least 17 points per game and do it incredibly efficiently. Defensively, Concord has one of the best units in the MEC as its 40.1 field-goal defense is third in the league. The Mountain Lions have held all but one opponent, Winston-Salem State, under 45 percent shooting this season. And CU is 4-1 this year when it holds teams to 40 percent or less from the field.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Looking back to last season, the Mountain Lions played one of their best games of the year in Buckhannon. Concord had five scorers in double figures including A. Smith and Frazee. Smith finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, going 8-of-9 at the free-throw line. Frazee had 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting to help the Mountain Lions to a 96-85 victory. In a 74-73 win at the Carter Center last season, it took A. Smith's buzzer-beater from just inside the three-point line to defeat the Bobcats. The Mountain Lions have swept West Virginia Wesleyan the past two seasons and hold a 4-2 record against them under head coach
Tesla Southcott.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
West Virginia Wesleyan posts one of the biggest challenges of the season thus far for Concord. They currently hold a 6-2 record and are riding a four-game winning streak entering Wednesday's matchup. Dandridge and Witt do the bulk of the scoring for the Bobcat offense, but the team is built on passing.
