HOT STREAK
Freshman guardÂ
Micah Young continued his torrid January stretch against Glenville State last Friday night. The Westerville, Ohio native recorded his second 30-point performance this month with 35 points on 13-for-23 shooting. Young is just one of two players in the MEC this season with multiple games of 35 or more points. He tossed in 39 points at Wheeling January 14. Over the last five games, Young is averaging 26.6 points while shooting 52.1 percent from the floor. In the first 12 games of the season, Young had only made eight three-pointers, but over the last five games he has connected on 16 triples. And against Glenville State, Young drained six three-pointers which were the most for any Mountain Lion this winter. Young is shooting 44.4 percent (16-for-36) from beyond the arc in the last five contests.
RARE SCORING AIR
The Mountain Lions poured in 100 points versus Glenville State—that was after they netted 91 points at Charleston last Wednesday. Since the start of the 2026 portion of the schedule, CU has seen its points per games rise nearly six points for the season, from 79.8 to 85.2. The Maroon and Gray starts the week ranked sixth in the conference in points per game which is also 34
th nationally. For the year, Concord has already topped 90 points seven times which is one shy of matching last year's team that scored 90 or more in eight regulation games. Overall, the 2024-25 squad netted 90 or more 10 total times thanks to a triple overtime games at West Virginia State and a two-overtime game at Charleston. Last year's team finished tied for sixth in program history in points per game (88.2) while this year's team would currently rank 15
th in all-time single-season scoring.
HEAT IT UP
Concord goes for a season sweep of Frostburg State after powering past the Bobcats, 97-83, December 10 at the Carter Center. CU went into halftime trailing 43-41, but outscored FSU by 16 in the second half that included the Mountain Lions shooting 55 percent (22-for-40) after halftime. The Maroon and Gray shot 54.3 percent for the game. It was the first game in a five-game stretch where Concord shot at least 45 percent from the floor. The high shooting percentage against Frostburg State was spurred by the Mountain Lions assisting on 22 of 38 field goals. Junior guard
Khamani Wertz tallied five assists. Sophomore guard
Josiah Rickards added three assists and three others had two assists a piece. Concord has shot 50 percent or better in five straight halves versus Frostburg State, dating back to the December 2024 road matchup.
THREE'S COMPANY
Junior forwards
Boubacar Djigo and Anferee Hanna, sophomore forward
Kraig Gilbert and Young led the way for CU in the earlier win against Frostburg State. Hanna scored 18 of his 25 points in the paint as he finished the contest 9-for-14 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the foul line. Gilbert tossed in 18 points and five assists. Djigo had one of his 12 double-double on the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. And Young came off the bench with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting, including going 3-of-5 from three-point distance. With Gilbert currently out with injury, the other three players will be counted on as Djigo (10
th/15.7), Young (12
th/14.6) and Hanna (13
th/14.5) all rank in the top 13 in the MEC in scoring. Additionally, Hanna is third in the MEC in free-throw shooting (83.3 percent).
GO ON THE DEFENSIVE
Frostburg State is a tough out on the offensive end as the Bobcats shoot 47.8 percent from the floor, fourth in the MEC. The offensive firepower is led by the MEC's leading scorer Trey Simmons who is netting 23.5 points per game, fourth in Division II. Frostburg State scores 91.4 points per game which is second in the MEC and sixth in Division II. However, FSU has had a leaky defense this year as it allows 91.7 points per game. For the Mountain Lions this year, Concord is 6-1 when holding the opposition to less than 45 percent shooting and just 4-6 when the opponent hits on 45 percent or better. In the December matchup, FSU shot 47.1 percent in the first half, but CU cooled off the Bobcats to 42.4 percent in the second half and 44.8 percent for the game. FSU is 1-6 when shooting less than 45 percent from the field this season.
WINNING AND REBOUNDING
Concord had its best game of the season rebounding the ball in December versus Frostburg State. The Mountain Lions owned a season-best +22 margin on the glass, 48-26. Djigo patrolled the boards, but junior forward
Eldon Terry threw in five rebounds while three other Mountain Lions had four rebounds: Rickards, Wertz and Young. The work on the glass was done on both ends as the Mountain Lions turned 16 offensive rebounds in a season-best 25 second-chance points. Terry and sophomore guard
Cole Lambert each had three offensive rebounds. The Mountain Lions are 9-2 this season when the rebounding battle is in favor of Concord. Meanwhile, FSU is 8-2 when they have an advantage on the glass. For the year, Concord is third in the MEC in rebounding margin (+5.4) while Frostburg State is sixth (+0.3).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
7- CU has won seven of the last eight games versus Frostburg State, dating back to a 92-87 overtime win in February 2022.
13-Â Djigo's next double-double will be his 13
th of the season which would tie him with Daniel Rahama (2022-23) and Terry Hopewell (2015-16) for the most by a Concord player in the last 20 seasons.
22- Assists by Concord against Frostburg State in December is one of three games this year with 20 or more assists.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Simmons is one of two players in the MEC with multiple 35-point games this season—the other is Concord's Young. However, Simmons is coming off a tough 3-for-12 night at Glenville State Wednesday in which he scored a season-low eight points. DJ Daniels adds 14.8 points per game on 52.4 percent shooting. Mitch Finefrock leads the MEC with 64 made three-pointers, shooting 40.5 percent from three-point distance. He averages 13.1 points per game and Kyle Whippen rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.7 points per game while grabbing a team-best 8.2 rebounds. Seven of the 10 wins for Frostburg State this season have been at home, but FSU has lost two of its last three home games, to Fairmont State and Wheeling.
