OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball opens the new year with a home matchup against the Salem Tigers Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Mountain Lions fell in a nailbiter on the road against ranked Mountain East foe, Fairmont State, 70-76. While CU entered the halftime break with a three-point advantage, but the Fighting Falcons narrowly outpaced Concord in the second half. Concord was spurred on by the top bench performance of the year, as junior guard
Alexis Frazee added a game-high 24 points. Senior forward
Abbie Smith was the other Mountain Lion in double figures, putting up 14 points and eight rebounds.
RED HOT SHOOTER
Frazee has been on a massive two-game tear for Concord. The junior guard's 24-point performance against Fairmont State consisted of six three-pointers which tied the single-game school record for three-point makes in a single game. She also tacked on four rebounds, an assist, and a steal in a career-high 33 minutes of action. In the game prior against Point Park, Frazee scored 17 points on excellent efficiency. She was 6-of-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from three-point range. In addition to the scoring outburst, Frazee dished out four assists. Over the two games, Frazee was 11-of-15 on three-point attempts for a stellar 73.3 percent clip. It all led to Frazee being tabbed the MEC Co-Player of the Week. She is tied for fourth in the MEC in made three-pointers (17).
EXCELLENCE ON THE ARC
Concord has been a top team in the MEC in shooting three-pointers and preventing three-pointers. On the offensive end, Concord ranks third in the conference with a three-point percentage of 32.9. Frazee, senior guard
Kennedy Scales, freshman guard
Lacee Smith and senior forward
Olivia Ziolkowski all shoot north of 35 percent from three-point range. Success from beyond the arc has been important to winning for CU, as they are 4-1 when making eight or more three-pointers in a game this season. On the defensive end, the Mountain Lions rank second in opponent three-point percentage, allowing just 27.9 of opposing threes to drop. Concord has held its opponents under 40 percent from three-point range in all but three games this year.
FIERCE FORWARD
Abbie Smith has been a beacon of consistency for Concord women's basketball over the years, and is continuing her form as one of the conference's brightest stars. Through 11 games, Smith ranks amongst the MEC's best in multiple categories. The Little Hocking, Ohio native is averaging 17.6 points per game (third), 10.4 rebounds per game (first), 1.1 blocks per game (sixth), a field goal percentage of 54.5 (first), and a free throw percentage of 84.2 (fourth). In Concord's last two games, Smith has posted a combined 31 points and 19 rebounds.
