Concord's Late Charge Falls Short at Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Concord University football team came up short, 38-31, at Bluefield State Saturday afternoon in a non-conference rivalry game at Mitchell Stadium.

Down by as much as 24 points in the second half, the Mountain Lions (1-1) scored the final 17 points of the game, but it wasn't enough as BSU (1-1) hung on for the win.

After going down 38-14 with 13:37 left in the third quarter, CU marched 75 yards over 11 plays that ended with sophomore quarterback Tyler Mizzell finding redshirt freshman wide receiver Dom Collins for a 21-yard touchdown.

Later in the third quarter, the Concord cashed in on a long field for Bluefield State as it came up with a safety. Senior defensive lineman Michael Herbert took down BSU quarterback Wesley Thompson in the end zone for the two points to reduce the advantage to 38-23.

The first drive of the fourth quarter stalled out for Concord just outside the goal line, but CU was able to get off the field quickly.

Concord needed just over three minutes to drive 90 yards over nine plays as Mizzell hit junior wide receiver Brandon George for a 23-yard score. Earlier in the drive, Mizzell had to convert a fourth-and-10 with a 13-yard scramble.

The Mountain Lion did their job again with senior defensive Ean Ryans intercepting a pass inside the BSU 40-yard line with 4:25 left. However, the Mountain Lions were only able to get the ball down to the Big Blues' 23-yard line before stalling out.

BSU ran the final 1:50 off the clock.

Bluefield State scored twice in the first quarter to go up 14-0 before Collins hauled in a 33-yard touchdown from Mizzell in the first minute of the second quarter. The Big Blues scored the next 10 points, but Concord took momentum into halftime as Mizzell connected with sophomore wide receiver Que Moore for a 35-yard score with 45 seconds left in the first half.

Mizzell had another 300-yard passing game as he tossed for 314 yards and four touchdowns.

Collins finished with 107 yards on seven receptions and two scores. George added 59 yards while redshirt freshman wide receiver Keyon Concepcion and Moore both had 56 yards with Moore finding the end zone for the second straight game.

Junior defensive back Nehemiah Scott finished with 10 tackles, two for loss and a sack. Sophomore linebacker Jonathn Williams collected nine tackles. Sophomore linebacker Xavier Ellison notched seven with three for loss.

The Mountain Lions have a week off before traveling to Charleston for the first Mountain East Conference game, September 20 at 1:00 p.m.
