CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University football team was unable to hang onto a 17-10 halftime lead as it lost 38-24 at Charleston Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Laidley Field.
Concord (1-2, 0-1 MEC) came out of the gate fast as the Mountain Lions needed less than 2:30 of the first-quarter clock to march 71 yards over five plays that ended with a 35-yard touchdown strike from sophomore quarterback
Tyler Mizzell to sophomore wide receiver
Que Moore.
The next CU scoring drive was more lengthy as CU chewed up nearly six minutes of time on 12 plays that saw graduate kicker
Kenyon Bowyer connect on his first field goal of the season, a 30-yard try.
The momentum stayed with Concord at the end of the first quarter as the Maroon and Gray shut off a Charleston (2-2, 1-0 MEC) drive when senior defensive back
Corey Radcliff intercepted his second pass of the season on a fourth-down play in the end zone.
Leading 10-0 into the second quarter, Concord took the lead to 17-0 with 10 minutes left before halftime as Mizzell found junior wide receiver
Damani Burrell on a 25-yard touchdown in the back right corner of the end zone.
UC scored twice before halftime to trim the Concord lead to 17-10.
Both offenses were quiet early in third quarter, but Charleston broke through and tied the game at 17-17 with 6:37 remaining in the period. The Golden Eagles added another score just over three minutes later. However, the Mountain Lions had an answer late in the third.
On the third play on the ensuing drive, Mizzell launched a pass down the right sideline, and redshirt freshman wide receiver
Dom Collins ran under the ball and raced into the end zone for a 72-yard touchdown.
Charleston grabbed a 31-24 lead with 11:14 remaining in the fourth, and Concord did not have a response as CU added a late score.
Mizzell finished the game 20-for-40 for 350 yards and three touchdowns. Aided by the 72-yard touchdown, Collins notched his third 100-yard receiving game of the season, finishing with four receptions for 144 yards and his fifth receiving touchdown of the fall.
Moore snagged three passes for 48 yards, and sophomore wide receiver
Keyon Concepcion added four catches for 46 yards.
Junior defensive back
Nehemiah Scott led the defense with 10 tackles (eight solo) and two tackles for loss.
Concord outgained UC 415-393, but Charleston held the ball for nearly 35 minutes in the game.
CU plays its first game of the season at Callaghan Stadium when it welcomes West Liberty to Athens 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 27.
