Concord Drops Season Opener to Kutztown

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University women's soccer team fell to the Kutztown Golden Bears 4-1 at Callaghan Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Three of the first five goals of the game were scored in the first 16 minutes, all three coming between the 11th and 16th-minute mark.

KU's (1-0) Caroline McDonald opened the scoring in the 11th minute, ripping one into the bottom right corner.

Concord (0-1) found its equalizer moments later as Ailsa Swinburne was taken down in the box. She converted the penalty kick, perfectly placing the ball into the bottom left corner in the 14th minute.

McDonald wasted no time, putting Kutztown back in front with her second goal of the game.

The rest of the first half saw the defenses settle in and the 2-1 score would hold into the break.

After a promising first 25 minutes of the second half by the Mountain Lions, Kutztown extended their lead with a goal coming from a corner kick.

Less than two minutes later, the Golden Bears had their fourth goal of the game fed a ball as McDonald finished off a hat trick.

Concord had chances in the second half, firing six shots in the period, but were unable to score again.

Despite the final score line, CU was only outshot 15-14 in the game. Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Tovar had four shots. Two of the three shots for sophomore midfielder Tiana Campbell were on target, coming in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Concord stays at home and will take on the tenth ranked Gannon Golden Knights at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
