ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team kicked off Mountain East Conference play with a 3-1 win over Frostburg State Friday night at the Carter Center.
Â
Concord (11-1, 1-0 MEC) started hot, quickly taking the first set 25-16. Frostburg State (4-7, 0-1 MEC) flipped the script and took the second set 25-17. Things were much more even in the third set, but CU pulled away late to a 25-17 advantage. The Bobcats tried to come back late in the fourth, but Concord fought off FSU for a 25-23 set victory, and a 3-1 match win.
Â
In the first set, Concord rapidly jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The Mountain Lion defense was causing all sorts of problems for the Bobcats. They forced Frostburg State to commit nine attack errors in the first set alone. Conversely, CU hit .333, its best of the match. Concord has won the first set in nine of their 12 matches in 2025.
Â
Frostburg State caught fire after the break as the Bobcats hit .414. Concord cut the Bobcat lead to 20-16, but couldn't string together a rally of its own as Frostburg State evened the match up.
Â
The third set saw freshman middle hitter
Addison Adkins spur the CU offense back into gear. She racked up five kills herself and Concord's block came back with a vengeance. The Mountain Lions forced FSU into nine errors again as they opened up a 19-15 lead and won by a comfortable eight points.
Â
In the fourth, Concord kept stringing small runs together as it recorded spurts of 6-1 and 5-1 runs to eventually open up an 18-10 edge. The Bobcats never wavered and fought back, cutting it to 24-19. FSU fought off four straight match points, but a kill from junior outside hitter
Chloe Thompson sealed the deal. The set saw Concord total 18 of its 51 kills for the match.
Â
The trio of Adkins, Thompson and junior outside hitter
Meg Williams paced the CU offense. Thompson had 13 kills, including the final point of the night. Adkins and Williams each had 12 kills. Williams was the only Mountain Lion with a double-double as she added 11 digs to her impressive night. Junior libero
Allie Davis led the team with 16 digs and junior setter
Paige Richmond notched 26 assists. Sophomore setter
Haley Sweeney just missed a double-double with 17 assists and nine digs.
