Concord Outpaces West Virginia Wesleyan in 4-2 Win

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team defeated the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats 4-2 in the Mountain East Conference opener at Callaghan Stadium Saturday afternoon.
 
After falling behind in the eighth minute to West Virginia Wesleyan (1-1-1, 0-1 MEC), Concord (1-2, 1-0 MEC) equalized just 21 seconds later when freshman midfielder Molly Watters found sophomore midfielder Tiana Campbell who knocked in her second goal of the season.
 
In the 20th minute, sophomore midfielder Stephanie Tovar scored her first goal of the season on a beautiful strike from outside the 18-yard-box. Sophomore defender Ella Rowell and senior forward Caitlin Webster collected assists for the goal.
 
Before Tovar's strike, Rowell's throw in was touched on to Webster before a 1-2 back to Rowell and onto Tovar.
 
The Mountain Lions continued threatening until the whistle blew, ending the first half. Concord outshot WVWC 7-2 at the break.
 
WVWC came out firing as they found the equalizer in the 51st minute off of a corner kick.
 
The next 25 minutes were back and forth, until CU finally broke through. Freshman forward Alana Ferguson headed home her first collegiate goal which put the Mountain Lions on top in the 75th minute. Senior midfielder Jessica Neville tallied the assist, finding Ferguson from a free kick.
 
Two minutes later, Webster was taken down in the box as she had beat the final Wesleyan defender, drawing a penalty. Campbell stepped up to the spot and smashed it home, collecting her first brace of 2025 and making it a 4-2 CU lead in the 77th minute.
 
Concord continued to pressure over the final 10 minutes, but settled for a 4-2 victory.
 
The Mountain Lions outshot the Bobcats 16-5 and put more shots on net, owning a 9-3 advantage. Campbell ended the match with five shots, all on goal.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough made one save in the contest.
 
Concord stays at home for the last game of their homestand to take on Glenville State Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
