CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost 15-5 to Point Park in the first game of the Mountain East Conference Tournament Wednesday evening at GoMart Ballpark.
PPU (38-13) was able to turn a 2-1 edge into a 7-1 lead in the fifth inning.
The first three runs of the game were scored in the first inning. A single by sophomore infielder
Nick DiSanti and a back-to-back hit batsmen loaded the bases for Concord (25-26) to start the game. Senior infielder
Tyson Burke delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in DiSanti.
Point Park answered with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first.
However, junior pitcher
Logan Darrow settled in and retired 11 straight batters with six coming via the strikeout. PPU, though, struck for five runs in fifth that included a home run.
CU was able to break up the Pioneers' momentum in the top of the sixth when senior utility
MJ Hunter steered a single fair down the left field line that brought in Burke and junior catcher
Kaden Swaim.
After trimming the deficit to 7-3, Concord saw Point Park go back up six runs, 9-3. The final scoring on the day came from junior infielder
Matthew DiSanti as he launched his fourth run of the season, a two-run shot out to left field.
Darrow (4-5) pitched better than his final line suggested as he worked 4.2 innings, surrendering seven runs. But, the Burke, Virginia native tallied a career-best eight strikeouts that also matched the most by any Mountain Lion this season.
M. DiSanti and Hunter each drove in two runs. N. DiSanti was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Mountain Lions plays Fairmont State 1:30 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game at the MEC Tournament at GoMart Ballpark.
