ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team swept the final regular-season doubleheader from Glenville State, 13-6 and 10-2, Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field in Mountain East Conference action.
The wins for the Mountain Lions qualify CU for the MEC Tournament that begins Wednesday at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia. Concord will play Point Park Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the double elimination tournament.
Game 1: Concord 13 – Glenville State 6
The Mountain Lions (25-25, 16-14 MEC) put five runs on the board in the first inning and never look back in a game one victory.
Junior infielder
Matthew DiSanti started the scoring with a two-run home run as the blast scored his brother and sophomore infielder
Nick DiSanti. After back-to-back errors and an infield single, senior utility
MJ Hunter singled to extend the lead to 3-0. And senior infielder
Brendan Brady capped the rally as he sprayed a two-RBI single to right field.
The momentum from the first inning carried CU to scoring at least one run in each of its first four at-bats. Junior outfielder
Korbin Bostic crushed his seventh home run of the season as part of a two-run second inning.
A sacrifice fly by N. DiSanti scored a run a in the third, and a Bostic roped an RBI double to left field for the fourth-inning run.
The Mountain Lions led 9-2 after four innings. However, Glenville State (27-21, 16-14 MEC) put the pressure back on Concord with a four-run fifth inning.
The GSU momentum was short lived, though, as the Maroon and Gray put the game away with a four-run sixth inning that included two bases-loaded walks and an RBI single by senior outfielder
D.J. Christian Jr.
Bostic paced the offense as he went 3-for-3 with three RBI, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Brady also drove in three runs. At the top of the lineup, the DiSanti brothers combined for four RBI, despite recording one hit between them.
Christian and junior catcher
Kaden Swaim were each 2-for-4.
Graduate pitcher
Zach Powell (7-8) worked 4.1 innings as he allowed six runs and struck out two. Junior pitcher
Kerry Collins pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in locking down his second save of the season.
Game 2: Concord 10 – Glenville State 2
The early offense struck again for Concord as CU posted six of its 10 runs in the first three innings, including three to start the game.
The first three batters of the bottom of the first reached base with Swaim shooting a single to right field to score N. DiSanti. Then with runners on the corners, M. DiSanti raced in on a double steal to double the lead to 2-0. With two outs in the inning, Hunter rolled a single through the right side to bring in Swaim.
A bases-loaded walk by senior infielder
Tyson Burke brought in N. DiSanti for a 4-0 lead in the second. And two more runs crossed in the third as another bases-loaded walk scored Brady before Christian raced home on a wild pitch.
GSU scored twice in the fourth inning to trim the deficit to 6-2, but sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Demario Faison came in and stranded the bases loaded to keep the lead intact.
The margin remained four until Concord delivered a four-run rally in the sixth. Brady poked an RBI single to right field, scoring Hunter. Freshman outfielder
JT Thompson followed as he lifted a double to left field that extended the lead to 9-2. The final run came across on another bases-loaded walk to Swaim.
All four runs scored with two outs in the sixth.
Out of the bullpen, Faison (1-2) tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief as he struck out four while allowing just two hits. Between Collins in game one and Faison in game two, the two relievers provided six shutout innings Sunday.
Brady capped his home career by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Hunter, also playing his last home game, was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Swaim and Thompson each had two RBI.
