GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost a pair of games, 8-5 and 9-8, to Glenville State Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Kenny Greenlief Field.
Concord is now 23-25 on the year and 14-14 in the MEC. GSU improves to 27-19 overall and 16-12 in the league. CU will need to win both games against Glenville State Sunday at Anderson Field in a doubleheader that starts at 1:00 p.m. AND have either Charleston sweep West Virginia State or WVSU take two from Charleston in order to make the MEC Tournament.
Game 1: Glenville State 8 – Concord 5
The Mountain Lions took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but was unable to secure a game one victory.
CU entered the sixth down 3-2, but pieced together a rally to overtake the Pioneers. Senior infielder
Tyson Burke doubled to right field with one out to begin the rally. After a strikeout, senior outfielder
Demetri Jamison drew a two-one walk to keep the inning alive. Fellow senior outfielder
D.J. Christian Jr. tied the game on a single to left field that brought in pinch runner and sophomore infielder
Alex Rodriguez. A walk reloaded the bases for sophomore infielder
Nick DiSanti to get hit with a pitch, and giving Concord a 4-3 edge.
However, Glenville State took a 5-4 lead on a two-run single before tacking on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior outfielder
Korbin Bostic did get CU a run closer in the top of the seventh with his sixth home run of the year, a solo shot to right field.
DiSanti got the Mountain Lions out to a quick lead as he homered out to left field for his fourth long ball of the season two batters into the game. Concord led 2-0 until a three-run rally by GSU in the second.
N.DiSanti was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bostic also drove in two runs while junior infielder
Matthew DiSanti was on base twice with a pair of walks.
Junior pitcher
Logan Darrow (4-4) was the pitcher of record out of the CU bullpen. Starter and freshman
Broc Taylor worked 4.1 innings as he allowed three runs on five hits to go with five strikeouts.
Game 2: Glenville State 9 – Concord 8
Concord let another late lead slip away as the Pioneers won the game two in the bottom of the seventh.
The Maroon and Gray started their final at-bat of the game down 4-1, but exploded for seven runs. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for N.DiSanti in the seventh as he slid a two-RBI single into right field to trim the margin to 4-3. Consecutive hit by pitches reloaded the bases and brought in a run as CU tied the game.
A bases-loaded free pass to senior utility
MJ Hunter gave Concord its first lead since 1-0 in the fourth. The rally continued when Jamison was hit two batters later to make it 6-4. And the biggest blow of the inning came from senior infielder
Brendan Brady on a two-run double to right field to give Concord a four-run advantage.
Glenville State, however, stormed back for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to clip the Mountain Lions.
Before the seventh-inning outburst, Concord's only run in the game came on a failed pickoff in the first as N. DiSanti raced in from second base.
N. DiSanti had another stellar performance at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Burke added two hits. Brady notched two RBI on his double.
Graduate pitcher
Zach Powell (6-8) was tagged with the loss out of the CU bullpen in the seventh. Starter and sophomore pitcher
Jake Robinson struck out seven batters over four innings, including striking out five of the first nine batters he faced. He allowed two runs on six hits.
