ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University Sports Information Director
Wes McKinney has been honored by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) for his work on a feature writing piece on Concord alumnus Jason Weitzel.
The feature on Weitzel titled "
Jason Weitzel Pursues Olympic Marathon Trials Challenge Saturday" was the runner-up in the District 2 Fred Stabley Writing Contest for athlete profiles. The contest is sponsored by CSC. The story was published on Concord Athletics website January 30, 2024, but was past the deadline for the Fred Stabley Writing Contest in 2024.
The feature story chronicles Weitzel, an Athens native, in his journey from the Concord cross country and track & field programs to his qualification for the United States Olympic Marathon Trials that were held in early February 2024 in Orlando. Weitzel now runs professionally for the Greeneville Track Club in South Carolina.
Millersville's Ethan Hulsey was the winner for District 2 in the athlete profile category for his work on
cross country runner Hannah Sweda.
The Stabley Writing Contest recognizes the top writing and storytelling content in eight different categories, including a category for undergraduate student writing entries. It honors winners in two divisions — NCAA Division I and College.
CSC members in all eight districts submitted nearly 500 articles. District winners advance to the national ballot, with national winners in each of the seven categories to be announced later this month. All writing had to have an original publish date between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2024, to be eligible.
