Concord Falls in MEC Tournament Opener Versus Fairmont State

SALEM, Va. – The Concord University softball team lost 7-2 to Mountain East Conference North Division Winner Fairmont State at the MEC Tournament Wednesday evening inside the Moyer Sports Complex.

CU wasted no time, jumping in front in the first inning.

Junior infielder Lacie Lewis singled to left field to lead off the game and was replaced by junior pitcher/first baseman Madison Hollis on a fielder's choice with one out. Then, senior infielder Courtney Raines walked to move Hollis into scoring position.

Senior first baseman/outfielder Kassidy Garvey drove in Hollis on a two-out single into center field and gave Concord a 1-0 lead.

FSU answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, but the Mountain Lions added another run in the second inning.

Junior outfielder Alina Giles crushed a leadoff triple down the right field line to start the frame. Then, junior catcher/utility Gianna Sloan-Lebron hit a sacrifice fly that brought Concord within two, 4-2.

After the first inning jam, Hollis settled down in the circle, tossing four consecutive scoreless innings to keep things at 4-2 after five complete. The Fighting Falcons plated three more runs in the bottom half of the sixth to close out a 7-2 victory in the first round of the tournament.

Lewis led CU by collecting two out of the team's six hits in the contest. Giles' second-inning triple was the lone extra-base hit for the Maroon and Gray while she also scored one of the two runs. Hollis fell to 8-6 in the circle after giving up just one earned run with four punch outs.

The Mountain Lions face Point Park in an MEC Tournament elimination game Thursday at 2:30 at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va. The winner of the 2:30 p.m. game moves on to a second elimination game Thursday at 5:00 p.m. against the loser of the Glenville State-West Liberty contest.
