Concord Falters Against Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped two games to Charleston Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader, 7-3 and 7-6, at Anderson Field.

Game 1: Charleston 7 – Concord 3
The Mountain Lions (23-23, 14-12 MEC) erased a 3-0 deficit, but could not complete the comeback in game one.

Charleston (23-21, 18-8 MEC) jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the third, but CU cut the deficit back to two runs after an RBI single by junior infielder Matthew DiSanti that scored senior outfielder D.J. Christian Jr., who opened the inning by getting hit.

UC came back with a run into the top of the sixth to restore a three-run advantage. But that lead was short lived as the Mountain Lions pieced together four straight, one-out hits that ended with senior utility MJ Hunter knocking in two runs. Concord got the tying run on base after a ground single by senior infielder Tyson Burke, but Charleston kept the 4-3 edge.

And the Golden Eagles tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh.

M. DiSanti was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior catcher Kaden Swaim also notched two hits. Hunter drove in his 24th and 25th runs of the year.

Sophomore pitcher Jake Robinson (6-4) was the pitcher of record as he tossed 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits.

Game 2: Charleston 7 – Concord 6
Concord watched a seventh-inning lead slip away as Charleston rallied for a game two win.

The Mountain Lions opened up a 4-0 lead with four scores in the third inning.

A bunt single by Christian led to an error which allowed Burke to score after he led off the third with his own hit. The other three runs came with two outs. M. DiSanti drove a double to right center field to score senior outfielder Demetri Jamison after his walk following Burke's single. An error and a walk kept the inning alive, and loaded the bases for junior catcher Austin Hear who also drew a walk. Hunter drew a second straight bases-loaded walk to bring the fourth run of the inning.

Charleston scored its first run in the top of the fourth, but CU scored a run in each of its next two at-bats. M. DiSanti's second RBI of the game brought in sophomore infielder Nick DiSanti in the fourth. And the Mountain Lions used an infield single by Hunter and a subsequent error to plate their sixth run.

After five innings, Concord led 6-3. However, Charleston scored once in the sixth and three more in the seventh overtake the Mountain Lions.

Hunter was hit to start the seventh, but was left stranded at second to end the game.

M. DiSanti had another two-hit game as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Hunter was on base three times with a single, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Graduate pitcher Zach Powell (6-7) was charged with the loss in his relief appearance. Starter and freshman Broc Taylor worked 4.1 innings as he allowed one hit and two runs while recording four strikeouts.

Concord travels to Glenville State 1:00 p.m. Friday for the start of the final series of the season.
