Concord Drops Games to Davis & Elkins

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped its final regular season games to Davis & Elkins, 1-0 and 5-3, to Davis & Elkins in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader Saturday.

CU ends its regular season 23-26 overall and 16-14 in the league while Davis & Elkins finishes 27-26 and 20-10 against the MEC.

Game One: Davis & Elkins 1 – Concord 0
Senators pitcher Sammie Jarvis locked down the CU lineup to earn the game one victory.

Both teams were retired in order through the first two innings and had chances in the third. Junior catcher/utility Kayla Sholter drew a leadoff walk to begin the bottom of the third to become the Mountain Lions' first baserunner. She moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from junior catcher/utility Gianna Sloan-Lebron, but was unable to score.

Then, in the fourth, junior pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis and senior infielder Courtney Raines picked up back-to-back two-out walks. Junior outfielder Alina Giles followed with Concord's first hit of the game on a ball to right field, but D&E escaped the jam to keep the game scoreless.

After the Senators scored a run in the top of the fifth, the Maroon and Gray stranded runners on base in the fifth and sixth frames as Davis & Elkins closed out the first game of the day.

Hollis (8-5) took the loss, allowing eight hits and working out of two bases loaded jams while only surrendering one earned run in the contest. Sophomore infielder Kendall Morgan logged CU's lone extra-base hit—a sixth-inning double—of the game while Giles and junior catcher/utility Morgan Gleason notched the only other base hits for the Mountain Lions.

Game Two: Davis & Elkins 5 – Concord 3
After the Senators jumped ahead 1-0 in game two, Concord answered in the third inning.

Freshman utility Blake Jamerson walked to begin the frame and moved to second after junior infielder Lacie Lewis singled through the left side the following at-bat. Then, Morgan plated the first runs of the day for the Maroon and Gray on a two-RBI triple.

Later in the inning, senior first baseman/outfielder Kassidy Garvey came around to score on a Davis & Elkins error and take a 3-1 lead.

Freshman pitcher/utility Mahailey Nicholson kept D&E off the board until the sixth as the Senators regained control 5-3 and never looked back to complete the sweep.

Morgan went 2-for-3 with both Concord RBIs in game two and logged her first triple of the season in the loss. Raines was also 2-for-3 in the game for her 10th multi-hit outing of the spring. Nicholson fell to 7-7 after giving up five earned runs across 5.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts.

CU awaits its matchup in the upcoming MEC Tournament at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia starting Wednesday.
