BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team went 1-1 Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan, winning 6-3 before dropping a 1-0 decision, at Hank Ellis Field.
The Mountain Lions are 22-14 on the season and 13-5 in MEC play. West Virginia Wesleyan goes to 9-23 overall and 6-12 in conference action.
Game 1: Concord 6 – West Virginia Wesleyan 3
CU scored the final three runs of the game, and junior pitcher
Kerry Collins provided three innings of scoreless relief to secure the win.
A two-run double by Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, Collins was able to limit the damage as he came out of the bullpen to get a fielder's choice out at home plate and induced a double play with the bases loaded to keep the game tied.
In the top of the sixth, a one-out walk to sophomore infielder
Nick DiSanti was followed by a base hit from junior infielder
Nick DiSanti. A WVWC error followed and allowed N. DiSanti to score to push Concord's lead back up 4-3.
Collins escaped more trouble in the bottom of the sixth as the Bobcats loaded the bases with two outs, but the Bluefield, West Virginia native got the final out of the frame on a strikeout.
Senior outfielder
D.J. Christian Jr. came through with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to three. And Collins retired WVWC in order to improve to 2-0 on the season out of the Concord bullpen.
Collins allowed two hits and struck out two in three innings. Starting pitcher and freshman
Broc Taylor recorded 12 outs as he allowed three earned runs.
Senior outfielder
Demetri Jamison hit his second home run in as many games, his fifth of the year, in the second inning. CU grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth with two runs, including an RBI double from graduate infielder
Ty Livingston.
Senior utility
MJ Hunter was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Christian notched two hits and two RBI. M. DiSanti was 2-for-3 with a walk. Livingston also went 2-for-3.
Game 2: West Virginia Wesleyan 1 – Concord 0
The final game in the four-game series turned into a pitcher's duel between sophomore pitcher
Jake Robinson and WVWC's Eli Brogan.
Robinson started his day by retiring seven of the first eight batters he faced before a one-out hit by pitch in the bottom of the third. The next batter doubled to push the Bobcats up 1-0.
CU threatened in the top of the fourth with back-to-back one-out singles, but was unable to get either base runner around to tie the game.
The next chance for the Mountain Lions came in the sixth when Hunter reached on an error, and Jamison followed with one of his two hits with two outs, but Brogan again worked around the trouble.
And in the seventh, Christian led off the inning with a base hit, and was pushed into scoring position with just one out, but WVWC got the final two outs of the game.
Robinson (6-3) was the hard luck loser as he went five innings, allowing a run on three hits. He struck out two.
Jamison accounted for two of Concord's five hits.
The Mountain Lions travel to Emory & Henry for a non-conference matchup 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.
