EMORY, Va. – The Concord University baseball team was outlasted by Emory & Henry, 19-17, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Porterfield-DeVault Field.
The Mountain Lions (22-15) set the single-game program record and Mountain East Conference record for home runs as they belted 10 homers, but it wasn't enough as E&H (14-29) took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
CU fell behind 6-2 after two innings with Concord's only two runs coming on solo home runs by junior outfielder
Korbin Bostic and junior catcher
Kaden Swaim. Down by four, the Maroon and Gray exploded for six runs in the third—all six runs came across on home runs.
Junior infielder
Matthew DiSanti launched a three-run home run to get the scoring started before senior utility
MJ Hunter went back-to-back on his third home run of the season. Now with two outs in the frame, graduate infielder
Ty Livingston hit his first career home run at CU with a two-run shot.
The lead grew to 10-7 in the fourth when sophomore infielder
Nick DiSanti and Swaim led off the frame with back-to-back home runs. However, Emory & Henry clawed back with a four-run bottom half to lead 11-10.
In the fifth, Livingston struck again with his second two-run home run to push the Mountain Lions back in front by a run. After the Wasps regained a 13-12 advantage, senior infielder
Tyson Burke's two-run homer was part of a three-run sixth for CU.
But, it was the five-run sixth inning that gave E&H the lead for the remainder of the game. Down 19-15 in the ninth, N. DiSanti swatted his second home run of the day, a two-run homer. However, it wasn't enough as the Wasps hung on for the win.
The previous home run record at Concord was five set in 2010 against Ohio Valley and matched in 2021 against Salem. The old MEC record for home runs was eight.
Livingston was 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. M. DiSanti went 4-for-6 with three RBI. All three hits for Swaim went for extra bases (two home runs, double). N. DiSanti added three hits and three RBI.
The 20 hits registered by CU were a season high.
Sophomore pitcher
Mason Kisamore (1-1) was the pitcher of record in relief as he gave up two earned runs in the sixth.
Concord remains on the road for a four-game MEC South Division series at West Virginia State starting 1:00 p.m. Friday.
