NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team went 1-1 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader against Salem at Frank Loria Field as the Mountain Lions bounced back from a 4-0 loss to win 6-0 in the nightcap.
Concord is 12-10 after Sunday's results. Salem goes to 9-13.
Game 1: Salem 4 – Concord 0
The Mountain Lions had trouble solving Salem starter Conor Thiele as the offense was limited to five hits.
SU scored three of its four runs in bottom of the second with all three runs being unearned against Concord starting pitcher, freshman
Broc Taylor. CU's best scoring threat came in the fourth after junior catcher
Kaden Swaim drew a leadoff walk, and two batters later fellow junior catcher
Austin Hear had a double.
Graduate infielder
Ty Livingston had a one-out double in the fifth, but the Mountain Lions were held in check the rest of the way.
Swaim was 2-for-2 in the game with a walk.
Taylor worked 1.2 innings as he allowed two hits and three runs (none earned). He struck out one. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Demario Faison and junior pitcher
Kerry Collins combined to toss 4.1 innings as the only other Salem run was unearned against Collins in the sixth. The duo combined for four strikeouts. Â
Game 2: Concord 6 – Salem 0
Sophomore pitcher
Jake Robinson continued his hot stretch on the mound as the CU bats backed up the right-hander to help secure a split.
The first run of the game came in the top of the second as junior outfielder
Dawson Gragg was hit with the bases loaded to bring in Hear.
While the Concord offense didn't score again until the top of the fifth, Robinson faced just two over the minimum through the first four innings.
In the fifth, sophomore infielder
Nick DiSanti walked with two outs before junior infielder
Matthew DiSanti doubled to right field. After a lengthy at-bat, Swaim launched a three-run home run out to left center field to take the lead to 4-0.
Robinson remained locked in as he struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth, and worked around a leadoff hit by pitch in the sixth to strike out the next three batters he faced.
Swaim provided more support in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run to left. M. DiSanti scored on the homer after his one-out double.
Senior utility
MJ Hunter pitched a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts as Robinson and Hunter combined to toss CU's second shutout in the last five games.
The only hit Robinson gave up was a leadoff double in the second that was erased on a double play later in the inning by Hunter at second base. Robinson tied his season high with seven strikeouts while allowing three walks. He threw 95 pitches over 6.0 innings as he improved to 4-2 this year.
Robinson's scoreless innings streak is now at 14.1 innings.
Swaim paced the offense with his multi-homer game to go with a career-best five RBI. M. DiSanti was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Offensively, Hunter was 2-for-4. Senior outfielder
D.J. Christian Jr. and Hear were both 2-for-3.
The Mountain Lions remain on the road as they travel to Lenoir-Rhyne 5:00 p.m. Tuesday for a non-conference contest.
