Concord Defeats UVa.-Wise, 13-8

WISE, Va. – The Concord University baseball team won its sixth game in the last seven contests with a 13-8 win over UVa.-Wise in non-conference action at Stallard Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions (10-8) plated 10 runs over its first three at-bats and never looked back in the victory.

CU scored five batters into the game as junior catcher Austin Hear brought in two runs on a bases-loaded single. Two batters later, senior utility MJ Hunter recorded his own run-scoring single to bring in junior outfielder Korbin Bostic, and graduate infielder Ty Livingston followed with an RBI single that ended up scoring two runs after a UVa.-Wise (19-10) error.

The Cavaliers countered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to cut into the 5-0 margin.

However, Hear kept the scoring going in the second inning with a two-out RBI single that brought in junior infielder Matthew DiSanti after he reach on a one-out single in the frame.

With a 6-2 lead, the Mountain Lions added to their lead with a four-run third. Hunter led off the inning with an opposite field double to right. He would score on a bunt by Livingston that was thrown away at first base. Later in the inning, DiSanti unloaded on his first home run of the season, a three-run blast, to increase the lead to 10-2.

Concord waited until the sixth inning to score again. Bostic crushed his second home run of the season, a two-run shot with one out. And after a pitching change, Hear made it back-to-back home runs with his fourth home run of the spring.

UVa.-Wise attempted a small comeback as it scored six runs in the eighth inning, but never threatened CU's lead.

After allowing three of the first four batters to get hits, junior pitcher Logan Darrow (2-1) settled in and retired 14 of the next 16 batters he faced to end his day on the mound. Darrow tossed five innings as he allowed two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out one.

Offensively, DiSanti and Hear were both 3-for-4 with a home run. Hear drove in four while DiSanti tallied three RBI. Hunter and Livingston were both 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hunter added a double.

The Mountain Lions return to Mountain East Conference play when they face Point Park on the road 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
