ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team finished the first half on an 17-4 run and never looked back in a 99-75 win over Glenville State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at the Carter Center.
With Saturday's win, Concord earns the fifth seed in next week's MEC Tournament and will play Frostburg State 8:30 p.m. Thursday at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Trailing 45-40 with 4:21 remaining in the first half, CU (15-13, 11-9 MEC) scored 17 of the final 21 points of the first half.
Senior guard
Skylar Davidson kickstarted the run with a three-pointer which was the start of seven consecutive points for Davidson. Up 47-45, junior guard
Kennedy Scales had an old-school three-point play.
And with 2:16 remaining, senior guard
Sanaiya Morris converted a layup to take the advantage back to five, 52-47. Sophomore forward
Saniya Hymes connected on one of her two three-pointers for the game 30 seconds later, and she had the final field goal of the first half to give Concord a 57-49 lead at the break.
Hymes continued her spree as she opened the second half with a triple. Then, Morris and junior forward
Abbie Smith combined for the next 11 points as CU led 71-58 with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter.
Glenville State (17-11, 11-9 MEC) got the margin back to nine points, 76-67, in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. However, the Mountain Lions began to pull away as junior forward
Imani Hickman had the first of back-to-back baskets at the 7:36 mark.
With the lead still comfortably in double figures at 15 points, 86-71, sophomore guard
Madison Young had the dagger three-pointer with 2:35 remaining as the lead became 18 points.
The teams went back-and-forth early on, but CU only led by two points, 27-25, near the end of the first quarter. Though, the Mountain Lions did not let GSU get away as the Pioneers' biggest lead of the first half was eight points, 39-31.
Smith led all scorers with 23 points to go with 15 rebounds for her 16
th double-double of the year. She was 9-of-11 from the field.
Davidson and Morris each had 20 points. Morris added nine boards and six assists. Davidson grabbed seven boards and notched four assists as she scored 15 of her points in the first half.
Scales scored nine points in 15 minutes of action.
Concord shot 51.4 percent (36-for-70) for the game as it was over 50 percent in three of the four quarters. Defensively, the Mountain Lions held Glenville State to 37 percent shooting and outrebounded GSU 48-39.
