STEPPING UP
In the absence of junior guard
Kollin Tolbert, the MEC's leading scorer at 21.3 points per game, several Mountain Lions had career nights at West Virginia State to fill the void left by the injured Tolbert. Junior forward
Ken Sallee received his first career start in place of Tolbert. The Chicago native tallied his first career 20-point game by topping his previous career high of 19 points set against Wheeling in mid-January with a 21-point performance at West Virginia State. Redshirt freshman guard
Brendan Hoffman came off the bench with 20 points in 42 minutes before fouling out in the triple overtime game. Hoffman had only scored in double figures once in his CU career—a 10-point game versus Salem earlier in the month. And already with three straight 20-point games to his name, senior guard
Corey Boston recorded a career-best 35 points. Boston's 35-point contest was the seventh-highest scoring game in the MEC this season.
RECORD REBOUNDING
Concord pulled down a program-record 69 rebounds at West Virginia State as it outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 69-53. The 69 boards were the most in a Division II game this season, surpassing the 65 rebounds that USC Aiken had against USC Beaufort just 11 days ago. CU also tied the MEC single-game record with Wheeling who had 69 rebounds against West Liberty in February 2017. Sophomore
Boubacar Djigo had nearly one-third of the Mountain Lions' rebounds at West Virginia State as he collected 22 boards—CU's first 20-rebound game since Jametrius Wade at WVSU in January 2016. Djigo added a career-best 16 points against the Yellow Jackets. Freshman forward
Kraig Gilbert assisted in the rebounding effort by plucking down a career-best 13 rebounds. Sallee matched his career high in rebounding with six while freshman guard
Josiah Rickards also had six boards, one shy of his career best.
NEEDING 55 MINUTES
Wednesday's 112-111 triple overtime loss for the Mountain Lions was the longest game for CU since a triple overtime defeat against West Virginia Wesleyan in December 2015 at the Carter Center. Boston played  53:14 at West Virginia State which is the first time a Concord player has played 50 or more minutes since Tommy Bolte played all 50 minutes in a double overtime game at West Liberty during the 2018-19 season. On Wednesday night, the Maroon and Gray played in their fourth overtime game of the season—Concord is 2-2 in overtime games this winter. CU had not played in four or more overtime games in the same season since 2021-22. No other team in the MEC has played in four overtimes games this season. West Virginia Wesleyan has been in three overtime games this year, including against Concord February 12.
GET THE BROOMS READY
The Mountain Lions go for their first season sweep of Glenville State since the 2018-19 season. CU picked up a 92-85 win at GSU January 25. Concord shot 55.8 percent—its third-highest shooting percentage of the season—against the Pioneers. Boston scored a team-best 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting while handing out six assists. Tolbert had a near double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds to go with six assists. Rickards came off the bench with 11 points and Sallee tallied 10 points in 12 minutes. Concord controlled the boards by outrebounding Glenville State, 43-31. At home last season, CU defeated Glenville State 101-79 after scoring 62 points in the first half. The Mountain Lions shot 57.8 percent versus GSU before dropping an 80-61 contest at Glenville State to end the 2023-24 season.
PAINT PATROL
In the seven-point road win at Glenville State, the Mountain Lions held Glenville State to 22 paint points—the lowest allowed by Concord this winter. The second-fewest paint points allowed by the Maroon and Gray this season was 24 given up to Point Park in December. At GSU, CU limited Glenville State to 11-for-29 in the paint (38 percent). Junior forward
Rene Diop and Gilbert helped control the GSU lane game by swatting six shots total—four blocks for Diop and two for Gilbert. Gilbert is coming off a career-best six blocks at West Virginia State. CU's 5.6 blocks per game is fourth in Division II. Individually, Diop is eight in Division II with 2.4 blocks per game. The Mountain Lions tallied 38 points in the paint as they shot 68 percent (19-for-28) in the lane at Glenville State.
DIFFERENT STYLES
Concord and Glenville State have scored the ball differently this season. The Mountain Lions are shooting 52.5 percent on two-point field goals this season which is on pace to be the highest percentage on two-point shots since the 2015-16 Mountain Lions hit on 53.3 percent of their two-point field goals. Additionally, CU is averaging 38 points in the paint per game this season or 44 percent of its scoring. Meanwhile, Glenville State has been reliant on the three-point shot as the Pioneers knock down 9.9 three-pointers per game which is second in the MEC and 22
nd in the Division II. Devin Collins is making 2.8 three-pointers per game and threw in seven triples against Concord in January. Samier Kinsler has 51 three-pointers, tied for 10
th in the MEC, in 26 games.
