Davis Wins MEC Heptathlon, Concord Places Ninth at Indoor Championships

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Freshman Luke Davis of the Concord University men's track & field team won the conference championship in the heptathlon at the Mountain East Conference Indoor Championships that wrapped up Monday afternoon at the Cline Indoor Track Complex. 
 
CU finished ninth as a team with 31 points. Charleston won the meet with 166 points. 
 
Davis, a native of Winfield, West Virginia, is Concord's first conference champion in the multis (indoor heptathlon or outdoor decathlon) since Dustin Greenwood won the decathlon in 2008. Davis broke his own school record with 4,304 points, fending off Glenville State's Aaron Kupfner by 30 points.  He finished third or better in six of the seven events, including winning the long jump Sunday. 
 
The highest single-event totals for Davis came in the 60-meter hurdles (768) and long jump (677). 
 
Senior Ian Gardner earned All-MEC Second Team in the 400-meter dash as he finished second in a time of 48.70 seconds. Freshman Brady Prior also scored points in the event by finishing eighth (52.24 seconds). 
 
Freshman Garrett Kinder was sixth in the 800-meter run as he notched a career-best time of 1:55.89 seconds. 
 
Other performances included sophomore Braden Ward placing 11th in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:40.94, and senior Logan Zuchelli was 12th in a showing of 8:48.68. 
 
Concord's 4x400-meter relay of Gardner, Kinder, freshman Aaron Miller and Prior clocked 3:34.41 to place ninth. 
 
The Mountain Lions get the outdoor season started March 14-15 at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge.
