POUR IT ON
CU picked up its second straight win, defeating MEC newcomer Point Park, 80-67, in its first trip to CCAC-Allegheny Gymnasium in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Mountain Lions got out to a fast start, scoring 54 points in the first half to claim a 31-point lead heading into halftime. It was the first time Concord scored at least 50 points in a half since the Maroon and Gray logged 56 points in the second half against Fairmont State on December 15. Junior forward
Abbie Smith led CU with 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double. Graduate forward
Trina Lewis (15), senior guard
Skylar Davidson (10), and sophomore guard
Alexis Frazee (10) also scored in double figures.
Â
EFFICIENCY IS KEY
In the 13-point win at Point Park, the Maroon and Gray shot 46.3 percent from the field, tying their third-highest mark of the season. In the 54-point first half, CU shot a resounding 64.7 percent (22-for-34), knocking down four of its eight attempted three-pointers and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The Mountain Lions moved to 4-0 when shooting above 45 percent this winter. Smith was 11-for-19 (57.8 percent) from the floor, while Lewis shot 6-for-9 (66.7 percent) to log a career-best 15 points. Concord also protected the basketball, tying its season-low for turnovers committed with 11 while forcing 15 PPU turnovers.
Â
ON THE CUSP
Smith wasn't the only Mountain Lion with a double-double against Point Park as Davidson scored 10 points and dished out 11 assists for Concord's first points-assists double-double since Olivia Morgan had 12 points and 12 assists against Bluefield State in January 2016. In her career at CU, Davidson has recorded 241 assists, just four shy of etching her name in the record book for 10
th all-time in program history alongside Jennifer Pollinger (1999-04) and Shari Walker (2004-07) with 245 career assists. The Mullens, W.Va. native leads the MEC averaging 5.1 assists per game this season and is tied for 20
th in Division II.
Â
AT THE BUZZER
The first time Concord and West Virginia Wesleyan met on the hardwood this season, the Mountain Lions came away with a dramatic victory. CU led for the majority of the fourth quarter, but it was WVWC that found itself ahead, 73-72, with three seconds remaining. Smith had the last say, drilling a buzzer-beating jumper from just behind the free-throw line on a full-court pass from Davidson that put the game on ice. Smith's buzzer-beater capped off a 30-point, 11-rebound performance, tying her career-high in scoring. Junior's
Imani Hickman (11) and
Kennedy Scales (10) also notched at least 10 points and knocked down two three-pointers each.
Â
HIGH-POWER PRODUCTION
While Smith ranks third in the MEC in scoring this season, WVWC junior forward Emma Witt ranks second in the league, averaging 21.2 points per game. Witt led the Bobcats in scoring when West Virginia Wesleyan visited the Carter Center on January 9, scoring 23 points. She has scored at least 20 points in eight out of her last 10 games played and finished one-point shy of her career mark when she logged 35 points at West Liberty on December 4. Witt also ranks third in the league in field goal percentage, shooting 49.8 percent from the floor, just behind Smith (53.0 percent).
