OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball team hosts Frostburg State in a Mountain East Conference matchup Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. inside the Carter Center.
CLOSERS
Down the stretch against Charleston, the Mountain Lions held just a three-point advantage with 2:45 left in regulation. Senior forward
Abbie Smith and sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs showed off their clutch gene, guiding Concord to a 68-61 win. Stubbs finished the last three minutes with six points and Smith tacked on five more. For Stubbs, she dropped in a jump shot and went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in the last 17 seconds to close it out. Smith's scoring started with a tough layup through contact which sent her to the free throw line, where she completed a three-point play. On one of the most pivotal possessions of the game, CU found her in the post where she hit a dazzling turnaround jumper to give Concord a 64-60 lead 19 seconds remaining. Stubbs (14) and Smith (13) have combined for 27 of Concord's 32 clutch-time points this year.
ANOTHER ONE
Smith not only helped Concord go 2-0 to kick off MEC play, but collected her second MEC Player of the Week Award. In the road victory against West Virginia State, Smith posted a line of 22 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks, shooting 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Against Charleston, Smith finished with 22 points on 10-for-13 from the field, 10 rebounds, and came away with two steals. The Little Hocking, Ohio native has posted six 20-point double-doubles through the first eight games and Concord has won on five of those six occassions.
LIMIT THE TURNOVERS
Concord is a perfect 4-0 on the season when they commit less than 15 turnovers as a team. The four wins include Lock Haven, Uva.-Wise, West Virginia State, and Charleston. The Mountain Lions are also 3-0 when they commit fewer turnovers than their opponent. Against Charleston, CU had single digit turnovers (nine) for the first time in 2025-26. Amongst the rest of the conference, Concord sits towards the middle in terms of turnovers. They average 18.5 turnovers per game (sixth), they force opponents to commit 17.3 turnovers per game (seventh), which puts their turnover margin at -1.25 (6th). The Mountain LIons are certainly trending in the right direction with their young team continuing to grow. Junior guard
Kiley Smich has only committed one turnover in the last 56 minutes she has played over two games while freshman guard
Cadence Blackburn has not committed a turnover in the three games, a total of 39 minutes.
MAKE LIFE HARD
The Mountain Lioin defense has been effective since the start of conference play. On the road against West Virginia State, Concord allowed 74 points, with WVSU posting a field goal percentage of 41.1. The Yellow Jackets struggled from three-point distance, going just 1-of-10. Against the Golden Eagles, Concord surrendered just 61 points which was good enough for a new season low. UC shot just 35.7 percent from the field, but where Concord was especially impenetrable was in the paint. Charleston scored just 18 points in the paint, shattering the old season-low of 36 recorded against Lock Haven. Amongst MEC competition, Concord is allowing an opponent field goal percentage of 41.8 percent (fifth) and a three-point percentage of 30.0 percent (fourth).
MAKE THE FREEBIES
Concord's free-throw shooting ability has helped push them to a 2-0 record in conference play. In the fourth quarters of those games, Concord went to the free-throw line a combined 23 times where they shot 18-23 (78.3 percent). This includes a perfect 8-of-8 from the line against Charleston. Diving into the final three minutes of regulation, Concord as a team is 30-43 (69.8 percent) throughout the season. Smith is shooting 81.4 percent at the foul line this season. Stubbs shoots 74.1 percent. Looking ahead to the matchup with Frostburg State, Concord will have to be wary of sending the Bobcats to the free throw line. Frostburg is atop the MEC in free throw percentage, shooting a stellar 83.2 percent.
A SHORT BUT RICH HISTORY
While this Wednesday's matchup marks just the 14th in history between the two squads, Concord and Frostburg State have seen some pretty epic battles in recent memory. The last five meetings between the two schools have decided by a combined 22 points. In 2024-25, Frostburg State knocked out Concord of the MEC Tournament in the quarterfinal round. Smith put up 18 points and 15 rebounds in the overtime loss. The season prior, it was Concord knocking out Frostburg State in the MEC Quarterfinals. Smith netted a career-high 30 points in that to go with nine rebounds, three blocks, and a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line. The last two games last year between the two teams featured a combined 21 ties and 24 lead changes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
6 - Concord is eyeing their first 3-0 start in conference play since 2019-20.
13 -
Kenyah Stubbs attempted 13 free throws in the win over Charleston. This is the third most individual attempts in a game this season in the MEC.
594 - Concord held Charleston without a field goal for 594 seconds in the third quarter.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Frostburg State enters the contest at an even 4-4 (1-1 MEC) record. The big change for the Bobcats has been the loss of
Emilee Weakley. Weakley was the MEC Freshman of the Year in 2022-23, Player of the Year in 2023-24, and tallied over 2,000 points for the Bobcats. This season, the Bobcats have relied on their forward duo of
Julie Spanelli and
Jenna Muha to fill that void. Spanelli enters this game averaging 15.1 points per game and 6.6 rebounds, while Muha posts 11.5 ppg and 7.9 rpg.
