OPENING TIP
The Concord University women's basketball team travels to Point Park to start a two-game stretch Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Concord picked up its third straight conference victory against Frostburg State in the last game at the Carter Center of the calendar year. The 62-53 victory saw both offenses struggle, but the Mountain Lions prevailed behind their stellar defense. Senior forward Abbie Smith and sophomore guard Kenyah Stubbs led the way on offense with 14 and 11 points respectively. Another place CU is continuing to thrive is from the free throw line. Concord shot 79.2% from the stripe against the Bobcats, their second best in a game this season and the best when attempting over 20. With the win, Concord acheived its first 3-0 start in conference play since the 2019-20 season.

LOCK DOWN
CU put together a defensive masterclass against Frostburg State. Allowing the Bobcats to score just 53 points, this was the lowest point total surrendered by the Mountain Lions since West Virginia Wesleyan scored just 50 on February 14, 2024. Defensively, Concord held Frostburg State to just 31.0% from the field and gave up just two three-point makes in the outing. Senior guard Kennedy Scales tacked on the lone block in the contest. Scales and junior guard Kiley Smich each had two steals as Concord had nine as a unit. The Mountain Lions forced 15 turnovers for the first time in three games and did it while committing just 13 team fouls, which is tied for their season low.

GLUE GALS
The guard pairing of Scales and Smich have made a living in doing a little bit of everything for Concord this season. Against Frostburg State, Scales recorded eight points, three rebounds, two steals, an assist, and the lone block for Concord. Smich posted a line of seven points, a season-high nine rebounds to lead the team, two assists, and two steals. The two guards help instill Coach Southcott's high level of defensive intensity and it came to fruition Saturday night as Frostburg State struggled all game on the offensive end. On the season, Scales is second on the team in minutes played with 28.3 per game and Smich is just behind her averaging 26.4 minutes.

APEX PREDATORS
The Mountain Lioin sit atop the Mountain East Conference in sole possession of first place. Currently, Concord holds a 6-3 overall record with a 3-0 MEC record to boot. They are the only team in the conference without a loss in conference play. Glenville State is the only other team in the MEC currently sitting on a three game winning streak. Concord's streak consists of victories against West Virginia State, Charleston, and Frostburg State. Amongst the conference the Mountain Lions rank third in blocked shots per game (3.22), third in rebounding (40.3), fourth in steals per game (8.22), and fifth in team field goal percentage (42.1). Smith is still posting excellent numbers to lead Concord. She's averaging 18.1 points per game (second), 10.6 rebounds per game (second), and posting a ridiculous 56.9 field goal percentage (first).

OUTSHOOTING OPPONENTS
On the season, Concord has finished with a better field goal percentage than its opponents in six of nine games. In the six games they outshoot opponents, the Mountain Lions hold a record of 5-1. The lone loss they have when outshooting an opponent came in the season opener against Seton Hill who are currently 5-2 and on a four game win-streak. Even when the offense struggled against Frostburg State, they held the Bobcats to an even lower field goal percentage and came away with the win.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
With Point Park being the newest university to join the Mountain East Conference, Concord has only faced PPU three times in program history. The first meeting came in the 2003-04 season, and the other two games came last year. The teams split the series, and Concord's win came on the road in Pittsburgh in 80-67 fashion. Abbie Smith dominated the game, posting 24 points and 13 rebounds on 11-19 from the field. Junior guard Alexis Frazee finished with 10 points and five rebounds in the contest. As a unit, Concord shot 46.3% in the game and a stellar 92.3% from the free throw line.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
