DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE

Senior forward Abbie Smith is dominating the low block to start the season. Through three games, she is averaging 24 points per game and 11.3 rebounds. With these numbers, she's on track to average a double-double for the second straight season. Among MEC players, Smith ranks third in points per game, second in rebounds per game, and second in field goal percentage at 60 percent. Smith has racked up 40 career double-doubles in her 92 career games played for the Mountain Lions. The Little Hocking, Ohio native has recorded a double-double in 43.5 percent of her career games.

STRONG FINISH

Concord has been their best at the end of games, outscoring opponents 76-54 in the fourth quarter. In all three games this season, CU has put up over 20 points in the final quarter, while allowing fewer than 20 points in each of those games. The Mountain Lions' best quarter all season came in the 4th quarter against Bluefield State. Concord scored a season-high 28 points in the final 10 minutes of regulation in the comeback victory. The Mountain Lions are 25-for-47 from the field this season in the fourth quarter in which is a field goal percentage of 53.2.

CONSISTENT AS THEY COME

Senior guard Kennedy Scales has had a really nice start to the 2025-26 season. Scales is averaging 9.3 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game. From the field, the Salem, Virginia native is shooting 44.4 percent and 60 percent from three-point land. On the defensive end, Scales is just under a steal per game and is a key piece in head coach Tesla Southcott's defensive gameplan. Scales played just 23 minutes against Bluefield State after picking up some early fouls, but made a massive difference in the second half. Scales netted all 12 of her points in the second half.

BEYOND THE ARC

Concord has really improved from three point range to start this season. As a unit, CU is shooting 32.6 percent from deep which ranks second best in the MEC. Last season, the Mountain Lions shot just 29.2 percent on threes which was eighth in the conference. While Concord doesn't solely depend on the triple, it does takes a lot of pressure off of the rest of their offense when those shots fall. Of the 15 threes made by the team, 12 of those come from players who weren't on the team a season ago including seven from the freshmen trio of Cadence Blackburn, Lacee Smith and Nasiya Smith.

CLOSE CALLS

Concord and UVa.-Wise have a close all-time series with Concord having a slight 12-9 edge in the head-to-head. In their last five meetings, three of them have been decided by six or fewer points. In their last matchup, Concord picked up the win at home in dramatic fashion, 84-78 in overtime. Smith had herself a game, leading CU with 18 points and setting a career high with 20 boards. Scales piled on 15 points off the bench as Concord had five scorers in double figures. The home team has won the last four games in the all-time series.

SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS

UVa.-Wise is off to a great start to their season, sitting at a perfect 3-0. Caroline Mullins has been excellent to kickstart the Cavaliers campaign as she's averaging 27 points per game, 11 rebounds, and shooting over 50 percent from the field. The Cavs are a young team after losing two of their three leading scorers from last season. A alum of Concord and an inductee in the CU Hall of Fame, Jamie Cluesman is 3-4 against her the team she played for from 2002-07.
