Concord Nets 2-1 Win at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team scored two first-half goals to down West Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Culpepper Stadium.

The Mountain Lions (9-5-3, 8-3-3 MEC) scored early for the second straight game as sophomore midfielder Stephanie Tovar opened the scoring in the seventh minute. On a cross through the penalty area, the Wesleyan (7-8-2, 5-8-1 MEC) defender headed the ball to the back post where Tovar was waiting to tap in her fifth goal of the season.

It marked the second straight game for Tovar with a goal.

WVWC wasted time in tying the game as the Bobcats struck for a goal in the 12th minute.

In the 15th minute, junior defender Katie Garratt helped the Mountain Lions regain the lead. Garratt's free kick from 25 yards away ricocheted off the Bobcats' goalkeeper's face and crossed the goal line. Garratt scored for the second time in the last four games.

West Virginia Wesleyan was held in check after its goal as WVWC only pushed three shots on goal, all in the first half. The Bobcats had four shots for the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough recorded two saves.

Tovar had four shots to lead CU. Senior forward Caitlin Webster tallied two shots while both shots for freshman midfielder Molly Watters were on target. The trio of Tovar, Watters and Webster combined for eight of Concord's 10 shots in the game.

The Mountain Lions can lock up the number two seed in the MEC South and a home MEC Tournament game with a win at Glenville State Wednesday OR a Charleston loss at West Virginia State Wednesday.

Kickoff at Morris Stadium between CU and Glenville State is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
