Concord Holds Off West Liberty for 2-1 Win

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team outlasted West Liberty for a 2-1 Mountain East Conference win on Senior Day at Callaghan Stadium.

Concord (12-3-2, 10-3 MEC) held on to take down West Liberty (5-8-4, 3-7-3 MEC) despite some late drama.

The Hilltoppers had the first real chances of the match forcing back-to-back incredible saves from senior goalkeeper Nathan Scargill in the 15th minute.

The Mountain Lion offense finally kicked into gear in the 34rd minute. Senior midfielder Darian Bradshaw had a shot cleared off the line and just a minute later, junior forward Jaden McKree had back-to-back shots saved off the line again.

Concord finally broke through in the 39th minute with senior midfielder Malher Santi Possu scoring his 11th goal of the season. Possu made a beautiful run, dicing through West Liberty's defense and poking a ball past the keeper.

The second half started slowly but senior midfielder Toby Evens-Gilham spotted McKree making a run in through the defense and played a perfect ball that McKree slotted past the goalkeeper for Concord's second goal in the 60th minute.

West Liberty made things a tense one-goal game once again with a 67th-minute goal.

CU had to survive a wave of chances by the Hilltoppers in the final 10 minutes, including a shot that rang off the left post in the final 10 minutes. Four of WLU's 10 shots for the game came in the final three minutes of the contest. The Mountain Lions committed four late fouls that set up chances for West Liberty.

The Mountain Lions had a 14-10 advantage in shots and an 8-4 lead in shots on goal. McKree led Concord with five shots, three of which were on target. Scargill made three big saves in the contest.

Concord wraps up the regular season with a trip to Charleston to face the nationally ranked Golden Eagles Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
