ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team defeated Wheeling, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
The Mountain Lions (5-3-2, 4-1-2 MEC) used a goal right before halftime from freshman midfielder
Mia Cook to get by Wheeling (2-4-3, 1-3-3 MEC).
With less than a minute left before halftime, a shot off a free kick from just outside the penalty area by sophomore
Marika Svensson was saved, but the Wheeling goalkeeper was unable to control allowing Cook to strike for her first career goal on a header inside the far post.
CU had a goal taken away in the 26
th minute as another free kick, this time from sophomore midfielder
Tiana Campbell, struck a WU player in the head. After the deflection and subsequent next shot rang off the post, freshman midfielder
Daisy Cook's rebound was waved off due to the injury of the Cardinals' player in the penalty area.
The shot by  senior midfielder
Caitlin Webster that clanged off the right post wasn't the only time CU hit the woodwork in the game. Campbell ripped a shot off the bottom of the crossbar in the 32
nd minute. And Campbell also had a shot bounce off the crossbar in the 69
th minute.
The Cook goal was more than enough for the Mountain Lions as they outshot Wheeling 29-2 in the contest with 12 shots being on frame.
Campbell led Concord with eight shots in the game. Half of the six shots for D. Cook were on goal. Junior forward
Stephanie Tovar registered seven shots in the contest.
The Mountain Lions have a quick turnaround with a 5:30 p.m. game Saturday at Frostburg State.
