Concord Falters at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a match at West Virginia State Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference match inside the Walker Convocation Center.
 
Concord (19-4, 7-3 MEC) was unable recover from its slow start as West Virginia State (12-10, 6-4 MEC) evened the season series. The set scores were 16-25, 18-25, 20-25.
 
WVSU went on an eight-point run early in the set to go up 11-4. The Mountain Lions never led in the opening game again. In the opening set, the powerful CU offense was limited to seven kills. Concord was unable to
 
The second set saw more offense from Concord as the Mountain Lions tallied 13 kills as a unit, The junior outside hitting duo of Chloe Thompson and Meg Williams got going with six and seven kills, respectively, through two sets. CU trailed 17-10, but won four straight points to close within three. Thompson picked up two kills during the quick spurt. The deficit of 17-14 was as close as Concord got.
 
After falling behind 0-2 in the match, Concord trailed early in the third set after WVSU won five straight points to make it 8-3. CU did mount a late comeback in the set. With the score 22-15, the Mountain Lions won four straight points behind three kills from freshman middle hitter Addison Adkins. But, 22-19 was the closest Concord got for the remainder of the match.
 
Adkins racked up nine kills while hitting a stellar .444 on the match. Thompson and Williams each finished with seven kills. Sophomore setter Haley Sweeney led with nine assists while junior setter Paige Richmond ended the match with eight. Junior libero Allie Davis tacked on 14 digs and sophomore defensive specialist Camille Testerman was the only other Mountain Lion in double figures with 10 digs.
 
The Mountain Lions stay on the road and will look for their 20th win against Fairmont State on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
