Concord Drops Road Contest at Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team fell to Fairmont State in straight sets Thursday night on the road at East Fairmont High School.

Concord (19-5, 7-4 MEC) was unable to overcome a hot Fairmont State (19-9, 7-4 MEC) start as the Fighting Falcons picked up their third sweep in their last four matches. The set scores were 18-25, 21-25, 17-25.

Sophomore right side Maddie Stull got the match started for Concord picking up two quick kills to open the first set. The Mountain Lions stayed within striking distance until the 8-7 mark. FSU stretched its lead to 15-7 over CU, after the seven point run. From then on, the teams traded points, but Concord wasn't able to muster a comeback.

Concord led early in the second 8-7 after a handful of attacking errors from the Falcons. Yet again, but it was a 6-0 FSU run that pushed the Fighting Falcons up by five. The Mountain Lions battled with junior middle hitter Jasmine Anderson hammering two kills to cut the advantage to 23-21. Concord came up short with Fairmont State winning the last two points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

FSU started hot in the third, but Concord was able to battle back with a four-point stretch that saw them take a 14-12 lead. Junior outside hitter Chloe Thompson collected a big block and kill and sophomore setter Haley Sweeney notched an ace in the run. The pendulum swung back the other way in a big way as the Falcons won nine straight points to go on to win the set by eight points

Stull led the team with nine kills. Freshman middle hitter Addison Adkins had another nice outing with eight kills, hitting .368 and adding five total blocks. Thompson followed just behind with seven kills. Junior libero Allie Davis ended the match with 18 digs with junior outside hitter Meg Williams joining her in double figures with 11. Both setters Paige Richmond and Sweeney finished with 14 assists.

The Mountain Lions end their three-game road trip Tuesday against West Virginia Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
