ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team bagged a sweep of Glenville State, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22, Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference matchup at the Carter Center.
Concord (15-2, 5-1 MEC) had its third-most blocks in a match this season and the most in a three-set contest as the Mountain Lions rolled up 11 blocks.
Seven of the 11 blocks came in the first set as CU shook off a slow start. The Maroon and Gray was down 13-7 20 points into the contest. However, the Mountain Lions ripped off eight of the next 10 points to tie the set at 15-15. A kill from sophomore right side
Maddie Stull pushed Concord ahead for the first time, 16-15. GSU (8-12, 1-5 MEC) never led again in the set as the lead swelled to 23-19 after another Stull kill.
The run midway through the first set carried over to the middle game as CU scored four of the first five points and controlled throughout. GSU tied the set for the fourth and final time at 11-11 before the Mountain Lions took off with a 4-0 spurt. Included in the run were kills by Stull and junior outside hitter
Chloe Thompson as well as a service ace by junior libero
Allie Davis. Another surge came at the end of the set as the final six points belonged to Concord.
Another CU run just before the midway point of the third set put the Mountain Lions in position for a sweep. Down 11-10, consecutive kills by junior middle hitter
Jasmine Anderson was followed by an assisted block by Anderson, and junior outside hitter
Meg Williams came through a kill to finish a quick 4-0 spurt. Concord held the lead the rest of the way to complete the sweep.
Williams notched her sixth straight double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs as 11 of her kills came in the second and third sets. Stull carried the CU offense early with seven of her 11 kills in the opening set. Anderson and Stull both finished with five blocks as Anderson chipped in eight kills.
Davis notched 17 digs to tie for the match high. Junior setter
Paige Richmond tallied 22 assists and sophomore setter
Haley Sweeney had 15 assists.
CU embarks on a three-match road trip beginning 7:00 p.m. Friday at Point Park.
