LEADING THE PACK
Since the MEC moved to the divisional format in conference play–prior to the 2021 season–Concord has never led the South Division at any point. Amidst their record-breaking start, the Mountain Lions have a share of first place with Charleston as they both sit at a 4-1 record in conference games. CU also has the best overall record of any team in the MEC, regardless of division, sitting at 14-2. Through 16 games in 2024, the Mountain Lions were just 7-9.
OUTSIDE EXCELLENCE
This past week, Concord went 2-0 with a five-set victory over West Virginia Wesleyan and a sweep of Davis & Elkins. In those wins, CU got massive performances from junior outside hitters Chloe Thompson and
Meg Williams. Against the Bobcats last Tuesday, both notched double-doubles. Thompson put up 14 kills and 18 digs and Williams finished with 18 kills and a season-high 19 digs, which were both team-leading figures. Their hot streaks continued against the Senators with Thompson amassing 12 kills on an exquisite .545 hitting percentage and Williams tallying 12 kills and 13 digs for another double-double.Â
BLOCK PARTY
Another key factor in Concord's success has been their block. CU averages 2.19 blocks per set which ranks fourth in the MEC. Middle hitters Jasmine Anderson and
Addison Adkins have been key contributors with Anderson collecting 1.19 blocks per set and Adkins right behind her with 0.81 blocks per set. These individual numbers rank third and seventh in the conference. The block has been on full display in Concord's two-match winning streak, as they finished with 13 blocks against West Virginia Wesleyan and eight against Davis & Elkins.
FAMILIAR FOE
The Mountain Lions have played Glenville State more than any other team in program history. Concord leads the all-time series 39-19 and 2024 was no exception. CU swept Glenville State in Athens and at GSU in convincing fashion. Williams picked up a double-double in the 3-0 victory in Glenville with 11 kills and 14 digs. The matchup in Athens was dominated by Concord at the net. As a team, they gathered a whopping 14 blocks.Â
SCOUTING THE GLENVILLE STATE PIONEERS
Glenville State has already surpassed their win total from a season ago, as they currently hold a record of 8-11. The Pioneers are losers of three straight matches and have just one MEC win on the season, a 3-0 victory over Davis & Elkins. Glenville State is led by freshman outside hitter Kaiya Lian who tops the team with 2.23 kills per set and is the only Pioneer with over two kills per set. The Pioneers put together a solid block with junior middle blocker
Mikayla Curry and sophomore middle blocker
Deniz Selen-Yazar leading that group. As a unit, they are fifth in the MEC with 2.03 blocks per set.
